Job Description


Work Location: Exton PA

Job Summary/Description 

Identify and isolate infectious disease-causing organisms. Conduct examinations on specimens collected from patients for bacterial, viral, protozoan and fungal infections.

Job Duties/Responsibilities/Functions (including but not limited to)

  • Perform serological tests: IgM and IgG ELISA in order to determine the recent infection of Borrelia burgdorferi and other tickborne transmitted diseases in serum and other body fluids.
  • Perform Western Blot testing to confirm the presence of the antibody to assist in the diagnosis of an tickborne condition.
  • Prepare samples, reagents and use the equipment such as the plate washer and optical density reader to ensure the completion of protocols for accurate diagnostic results.
  • Perform quality control in pre-analytical phase in sample reception, submission forms, quality of specimens; in the analytical phase using the quality control and internal controls and post analytical testing in interpretation and troubleshooting to ensure the accuracy of the test result.
  • Evaluate new diagnostic procedures to determine the performance characteristics and suitability for laboratory implementation. Evaluate performance of new procedures, methods, equipment and reagents used in the testing when need to be improved or changed, including: reading principles, protocols, perform the validation and analyze results in order to provide the most advanced diagnostic testing for the health of the public.
  • Use laboratory information management system (LIMS) to accession specimens, enter and approve demographics, manage the samples through the testing processes and report the laboratory testing results to ensure timely reporting to laboratory and public health partners.
  • Participate in proficiency testing to ensure and maintain high quality standards of testing for serological testing of different viruses, to ensure compliance with CLIA regulations.
  • Perform quality control checks on equipment, reagents, controls and procedures to ensure the reliability of test results and protect the health of the public.
  • Follow the Bureau’s Quality Control and Quality Assurance Policies to ensure accurate results and compliance with CLIA regulations.
  • Provide technical consultation and training on technical matters for new laboratory employees, public health agencies, students and PA clinical microbiology laboratories to ensure their understanding of virology testing and surveillance programs.
  • Prepare, package and ship outsource tests, such a serological and identification of pathogens to ensure all referral testing is performed.
  • Provide customer service via telephone to submitting agencies by providing timely laboratory results and laboratory status update that aid in the decisions about diagnosis, effective treatments and control efforts.
  • Provide technical support to submitting agencies about specimen collections and laboratory testing procedures to ensure the proper collection and handling of the specimens.
  • Engage in educational activities aimed to increase technical knowledge and skills through literature searches and attendance at conferences. Shares with colleagues the information gained from external training opportunities to ensure that all staff has current up-to-date information.
  • Adheres to safety policies as described in the Bureau of Laboratories Policy Manual, Chemical Hygiene Plan, and Bloodborne pathogens Plan to ensure personal safety and the safety of others with the Bureau.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • One year of professional laboratory work experience in microbiology, and a bachelor’s degree that includes 20 credits in the biology discipline such as microbiology, bacteriology, immunology, cellular, anatomy, physiology, genetics, or molecular biology and 12 credits in chemistry or biochemistry.
  • Highly Desired: Ability to perform serological screening testing for tickborne transmitted diseases Ability to perform confirmatory testing: Western Blot Ability to evaluate new diagnostic procedures
  • Required: Professional laboratory work experience in microbiology
