Essential Job Functions for CNA

 

Provides routine physical resident care. Lifts and positions residents. Uses crisis pre/intervention techniques. Interacts with residents. Assists with activities of daily living. Acts as a resident advocate. Observes and reports resident behavior/condition orally and in writing. Operates necessary equipment. Responds to emergencies. Promotes and maintains a safe and therapeutic environment. Maintains active Nurse Aide registration with Department of Health.

CNA tasks include the following:

*Provide basic care to residents by meeting their personal hygiene, physical and emotional needs in order to maintain a healthy, clean and safe environment while meeting the Department of Health's licensing requirements.  Follows and applies nursing and Center policies and procedures.

*Communicate changes in status of both resident and physical environment by verbal/written notification to supervisor or other appropriate designated person in order to provide consistency of care and a safe, clean, comfortable environment for the residents.  Documents on the clinical record as assigned.

*Utilize therapeutic communication skills and crisis prevention techniques in interaction with residents.  Act as a resident advocate.

*Participates in rehabilitation/restorative programs for residents by assisting professional staff to help residents achieve their highest level of potential for independence and self-fulfillment. 

*Contributes to the resident's Plan of Care by attending Interdisciplinary Team meetings to discuss treatment plans and develop individualized goals and methods to approach these goals for rehabilitation/maintenance of residents.

 *Provide instruction to teach residents to make beds and care for personal possessions within their limitations and performs duties for those who are unable.  Observes and assists at mealtime and with nourishments, teaching proper eating habits and promoting intake as necessary.  Utilize infection control techniques. 

*Protect the safety and provide comfort to the resident by observing and reporting unusual incidents, safety hazards, needed repairs or emergency occurrences to supervisory personnel and assisting as required by implementing procedures of the Center in order to maintain a safe, functional, supportive and effective environment; provide comfort to the resident by being alert for and reporting to the Charge Nurse abnormal signs and symptoms in consumers' conditions, including changes in behavior that may signify pain or discomfort; by helping residents in using assistive devices; by applying, under supervision, comfort and control devices such as braces, binders, supports, positioners per individualized plan of care; by positioning comfortably and assisting in transferring residents; by rounding with personnel at beginning and ending of shift for preparedness of residents and unit in order to maintain a safe and comfortable environment.

*Assist with routine procedures pertaining to admissions, transfers and discharge of residents.

*Assists in transportation of residents by accompanying residents to and from health provider facilities by escorting residents in order to ensure attendance at appointments.

* Assists and encourages resident attendance and participation in activities and other therapeutic rehabilitation programs to improve their awareness of self and others; their functioning and social interaction.

*Maintains positive, constructive working relationships with Center staff; be aware of the needs and sensitivities of others; treats others in an equitable and non-discriminatory manner regardless of race, color, religious creed, lifestyle, disability, ancestry, national origin, affectional or sexual orientation, union membership, sex and age, or other non-work related factors; promotes a non-discriminatory environment; learns to serve as a positive role model to resident's family, staff, and presents a positive image of the Center at all times; remains alert at all times and executes job duties in compliance with

DHS, Center, and departmental policies, procedures; uses proper equipment; follows Center safety and security policies and procedures. 

 *Makes resident care decisions based on training and in consultation with professional nursing staff; i.e., LPN; RN; RN Supervisor; Nurse Manager; and/or Nursing Director.

*Must be registered and certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Health as a Nurse Aide.
