Epidemiologist - Opioid Crisis

Job Summary/Description 

The Epidemiologist will work closely with vital statistics program staff, state viral hepatitis coordinator and opioid epidemiologist to identify and review existing data sources, those including but not limited to PA NEDSS, Census, PDMP, census, vital statistics (birth, death certificate, etc.) and link these data sources using data linkage algorithms (deterministic, probabilistic and geospatial link) when possible.  Extracting public available social demographic data from Census and other data sources, ascertain birth, death from vital statistics, PA NEDSS data from PA NEDSS, and drug using information from PDMP with identifiable information for data link.   Obtain various data in different format and manage them into the same format for data linkage. Using ArcGIS or other software to geocode available data sources and using geospatial link to link public information by spatial region to PDMP, and other data collected.  Develop algorithms to validate data linkage reliability and validity.  Interpret analytic results and use ArcGIS for spatial analysis to identify hot spots for program intervention implementation.  


Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, Biostatistics, Data Science, or other discipline with hands experience on relational database management.

  • A good understanding of Epidemiology, especially in data interpretation and presentation and general knowledge of Hepatitis C and prescription drug process.

  • Have experience working with public available data sources like Census, vital statistics (birth, death certificate data), and other registry data. 

  • A good understanding of multiple data linkage methods (algorithms): deterministic and probabilistic with good data manipulation skills, especially in character data manipulation using statistical software or other data linkage software.

  • Have working knowledge on developing algorithm to validate data linkage reliability and validity.

  • Have working experience with mapping software ArcGIS and proficient with SAS.
