Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

  • One (1) year of experience assisting a licensed pharmacist in the preparation and dispensing of medications in a hospital pharmacy or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Basic computer skills to include, but not limited, to Microsoft Office Products.

Position Purpose:

This position assists in the provision of pharmaceutical services in a veterans' long term care facility.

Description of Duties:

Receive, prepare, fill, and document prescriptions, including controlled substances, under the supervision of a Registered Pharmacist. Assist in the performance of QS-1 software tasks such as running reports and printing Medical Administration Records (MARS) and Treatment Administration Records (TARS) as needed.

Maintain and control the pharmacy inventory according to reorder levels. Prepare purchase requests for pharmaceuticals; receive and stock orders. Maintain files or records of requisitions and purchases. Assist with periodic required inventories.

Locate and process outdated (expired) pharmaceuticals for return to the manufacturer for credit or replacement.

Enter medication orders onto computerized medication profiles and update medication profiles as required. Bill 3rd party for medications as they are dispensed.

Maintain and replenish emergency drug boxes.

Become familiar with resident medication histories; compound prescriptions (such as ointments) as directed. Use reference material to gain knowledge of drug names/strengths and product identification.

Provide input to the Quality Improvement Program or other facility programs.

Maintain work area in a clean and orderly condition while performing related housekeeping duties.

Perform other tasks such as typing, making copies, filing, answering phones, recording and distributing messages, etc.

Support the facility QAPI efforts by attending all assigned QAPI training; following established policies and procedures in support of QAPI efforts; participate in PIP teams as assigned; sharing ideas for improvement in the organization; and supporting QAPI efforts both verbally and non-verbally, including adjusting performance and practice in accordance with QAPI initiatives and findings.

Performs work in accordance with the DMVA general safety rules and safety rules for this position. Immediately reports all workplace injuries or incidents to the supervisor; and/or immediately corrects any safety hazards in the work area or reports same to supervisor.

Use personal protective equipment when required such as gloves, masks, face shield, etc.

Perform other related duties as required.

Decision Making:

Work assignments are made in accordance with the fill schedule and adjusted as necessary.

Generate prescription labels, fill prescriptions, and screen for interactions within the scope of training under the direction of the Pharmacist.

Essential Functions:

  5. Sort pills and medications by color, size, type, and prescription
  6. Bend, stoop, grasp, reach, walk, pull, push, and lift
  7. Stand on hard surfaces for long periods of time
  8. Use standard office equipment and software
  9. Use personal protective equipment and follow safety practices
