Job Description

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Possession of a PhD or Psy.D in psychology and a current license to practice psychology as issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Psychology or possession of a current license to practice psychology as issued by another state with licensure requirements acceptable to the Board.
  • Two years of experience as a licensed professional.
  • Licensed Psychologist with experience with providing treatment to individuals with mental illness and intellectual disability, one year of which must have been in a supervisory or administrative capacity.

Position Purpose:

  • The Licensed Psychologist functions as a member of the Psychology staff and as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team (when applicable). The incumbent in this position is responsible for providing psychological services to patients receiving treatment in an inpatient psychiatric hospital setting. The person in this position through education, training, and observation takes into consideration during interaction and programming the age/disability needs of the patient. The Licensed Psychologist performs independent and specialized clinical work in an inpatient psychiatric hospital setting.
  • Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher-level licensed psychologist or administrator and is subject to review through consultation and evaluation of work performed.

Specific duties include:

  • Interviews patients to identify strengths and weaknesses; administers a variety of psychological tests which are designed to measure intellectual capacities, attitudes, competency, achievement levels, social developmental levels, neuropsychological functioning, and personality traits; scores test results and interview responses, and participates in the treatment team process in order to aid multidisciplinary treatment team staff in determining appropriate individualized treatment goals for the rehabilitation of patients with a mental illness.
  • Assess patients psychological services needs; provides education to the patients, their families, when applicable, and other interested parties; conducts individual and group therapy utilizing various treatment modalities in order to assist the patients in recognizing their problems.
  • Participates in developing multidisciplinary Comprehensive Individualized Treatment Plans (CITP) by assessing the patients and attending treatment team meetings; identifies treatment modalities and staff intervention; assist with the development of behavioral plans; documents progress or lack of progress toward treatment goals; makes recommendations for appropriate treatment program changes in order to assure that appropriate treatment is provided in the least restrictive environment.
  • Serves as a unit psychologist (Treatment Team Coordinator) for one of the Torrance State Hospital civil units while overseeing the provision of psychological services for approximately 22-26 patients living on the assigned ward. Duties for the Treatment Team Coordinator are followed according to hospital policy and procedure.
  • Conducts group, individual, and milieu therapy sessions by meeting with the patients who are referred by the treatment team according to the time and frequency identified on the CITP in order to improve the patient’s psychological and emotional behavior.
  • Serves as a mentor to Psychological Services Specialist (PSS) staff, as assigned, to orient and assist them with problems arising from their work.
  • Provides consultation and psychological services education and training to hospital staff and students, as appropriate.
  • Participates in Medicare B Program in which appropriate services rendered are reimbursed. Participation is accomplished by fulfilling requirements of the program and by billing Medicare B monthly such that funds are received by DHS from Medicare B for billable treatment services provided.
  • Functions actively as a member of the Psychology Department by attending supervisory sessions and departmental meetings, and by serving on departmental and/or hospital-wide committees when requested in order to remain knowledgeable of department activities and to represent the department in a professional manner through the hospital.
  • Participates in hospital meetings to discuss and evaluate the adjustment of patients and civil programs; recommends modification to mental health programs in order to assist Torrance State Hospital in program improvements.
  • Performs all duties in compliance with the Performance Improvement/Risk Management standards/procedures designated in the program plans of the department and the hospital by familiarization with those standards/procedures in order to assure that all departmental services are provided within PI/RM requirements.
  • Serves as Training Director for doctoral level internship program as part of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral & Internship Centers (APPIC). Provides weekly supervision for doctoral clinical psychology interns and practicum students. Assigns and directs the provision of clinical services for interns and students while countersigning all required documentation. Governs intern and practicum student leave time as well as completes required employee performance reviews. Oversees and maintains intern and practicum programming while ensuring compliance with APPIC standards and university practicum agreements.
  • Participates in professional trainings by attending/conducting in service and out service training sessions relevant to job duties in order to develop and maintain high level of professional competency.
  • Provides testimony, as needed, in recommitment hearings.
  • Demonstrate competencies in application of techniques and maintain certification in Advance MANDT Training as well as CPR.
  • Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned. Purpose and standards will be given at the time of each assignment.
  • Serves as the Training Director for the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) Clinical Psychology Internship Program at the hospital.
