Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

  • The medical physician must have completed a residency program in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine, which meets the requirements of the American Board of Medicine or American Osteopathic Board of Medicine.
  • The physician must possess a current Pennsylvania medical license, DEA registration, and Basic Life Support Certificate.

Job Description:

  • Provide medical care and treatment to patients in designated areas, as well as all related duties, to ensure access to care and patient safety at all times.
  • Performs Admission Physical & Neurological Exam and Medical/Surgical History on all new admissions within 24 hours of admission, reviews all records from community hospitals and previous hospitalizations, and formulates medical diagnosis, treatment goals and plans of all individual patients.
  • Performs monthly review of each patient’s medication profile, in conjunction with the attending psychiatrist. Performs a medical exam on each patient, documents findings accordingly in the progress notes, reviews and updates the Medical Treatment plan at that time.
  • Provides annual physical and neurological examinations and summary of previous year’s medical illnesses and treatment for all patients in designated areas within 30 days of the anniversary of their admission date and prior to their annual ICTP.
  • Renders medical treatment to all patients in designated areas and makes rounds on a daily basis, ordering labs, x-rays and other diagnostic studies and consultations as necessary. Reviews results of studies, reports, consultations and follow-up care where indicated.
  • Identifies patient’s medical treatment needs and facilitates patient’s transfer to community hospital for emergency or non-emergency medical treatment. Maintains regular communication with the community hospital physicians while patient is receiving treatment there. Provides supervisor and treatment team with regular updates on patient’s medical condition.
  • Ensures the attending psychiatrist and Treatment Team are aware of patients with medical illnesses and current treatment orders.
  • Develops medical goals and treatment plans to treat patients’ physical problems for designated patients. Ensures documentation of all problems and response to treatment is entered into a progress note.
  • Attends assigned medical staff and hospital committee meetings as a voting member and participates in committee work as assigned.
  • Is available to attend all medical and psychiatric emergencies during the hours of 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Participates in noon (1200-1300) coverage schedule on a rotating basis.
  • Participates in the on-campus evening, weekend, and holiday on-call responsibility as needed.
  • For medical emergencies, announces the medical emergency and initiates appropriate medical actions/interventions. Assumes a leadership role to provide direction and management to the staff responding to the emergency. Following the emergency, takes appropriate action according to CSSH Policies and Procedures.
  • For psychiatric emergencies, responds to hospital/patient emergencies by assuming a leadership role to provide direction and management expertise. Provides the patient with individual instruction, medical treatment or medication as indicated by clinical assessment and hospital policies. Utilizes verbal techniques to address patient concerns and prescribes appropriate medications, when necessary, to assist in de-escalation.
  • For disaster/emergencies e.g. fires, earthquakes, floods, hazardous material incidents, utility interruptions or transportation accidents, follows basic emergency procedures as contained in CSSH Policies and Procedures.
  • Provides employee physicals to new employees.
  • Mentors students on clinical rotations.
  • Participates as a collaborating physician for medical CRNPs.
  • Completes Medicare billing forms as appropriate for all treatment interventions including Medicare Part B eligible patients.
  • Participates in Hospital-wide and Department PI Plan by performing assigned audits and reviews on a monthly basis.
  • Obtains and maintains crisis response intervention certificate from current Commonwealth vendor and utilizes skills appropriately. Obtains and maintains current CPR certificate.
  • Complies with all applicable Agency, Program Office, Federal, and State requirements and mandates.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

ADA Essential Functions:

  1. Performs comprehensive admission and annual physical examination, neurological examination and medical history for all designated patients. Performs monthly medication review and pertinent examination for all designated patients.
  2. Formulates medical diagnosis, treatment goals and plans based on evaluation of the patient.
  3. Attends to patient’s medical needs and provides medical treatment, diagnostic workup and consultation referrals as necessary.
  4. Provides noon coverage and attends to all medical and psychiatric emergencies throughout the hospital.
  5. Attends assigned hospital committees meetings as a Medical Staff representative.
  6. Participates in hospital-wide and departmental PI Plans.
  7. Participates in the on-campus evening, weekend, and holiday on-call responsibility as needed.
  8. Performs employee physicals. Mentors clinical students. Participates as a collaborating physician for the medical CRNPs.
  9. Obtains and maintains Crisis Response intervention certificate from current Commonwealth vendor, and utilizes skills appropriately.
  10. Obtains and maintains current CPR certificate.
  11. Complies with all applicable Agency, Program Office, Federal, and State requirements and mandates.
