Founded in 1968 to meet the post-secondary and continuing education needs of Cecil County residents, Cecil College has been serving the community and shaping its future for nearly 50 years. The College is governed by a Board of Trustees appointed by the governor. The College’s fifth president, Dr. Mary Way Bolt, reports directly to the Board of Trustees.

Cecil College is centrally located in Maryland’s most northeastern county, just one half mile from Interstate 95. It is easily accessible from Philadelphia and Baltimore, as well as from Wilmington, Delaware.

With a diverse student population, Cecil College enrolls approximately 2,500 credit students and 3,400 non-credit students. Cecil offers associate degrees, certificate programs and non-credit classes. Cecil offers a variety of associate degree and certificate programs.

Job Summary

Due to the need of interaction with students, employees, and the college community this position requires in-person presence.

The Grounds Supervisor is responsible for ensuring campus grounds are maintained in a safe and efficient manner through the execution of the following duties:

Essential Job Functions:

  • Plans, coordinates, and schedules daily grounds maintenance activities.
  • Assigns daily duties to groundskeepers and monitors progress and workmanship.
  • Review and approve time sheets and time off requests for the grounds staff.
  • Participates in and supervises mowing, trimming, edging, pruning, planting, and mulching.
  • Ensures grounds trash receptacles and fugitive trash are gathered and disposed of daily.
  • Monitors the functionality and condition of all storm water management devices. Coordinates maintenance activities and corrective repairs to storm water management areas.
  • Monitors weather forecasts and plans and executes snow removal activities. Serves as on-site point of contact and conducts site assessments for snow removal activities.
  • Conducts all safety and occupational training and maintains records of such.
  • Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal safety and environmental regulations.
  • Ensures compliance with all College rules and policies.
  • Ensures inspection of equipment and vehicles prior to use. Coordinates maintenance and repairs as needed.
  • Responsible for managing the college’s motor vehicle fleet.
  • Coordinates/conducts preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
  • Coordinates with and works alongside contractors on grounds projects.
  • Monitor levels of supplies and procures as needed.
  • Works with Facilities Auxiliary Services Supervisor to set-up/tear-down for events.
  • Assists other departments dependent upon need.
  • Assists with oversight of projects as assigned.
  • Assists with oversight of staff in maintenance, custodial and auxiliary services as needed.
  • Works with and assists maintenance, custodial and auxiliary services to complete work tasks as required.
  • Communicates to supervisor on a regular and timely basis the status of projects, assignments, and duties, and any problems arising therefrom, and suggestions for solutions to the problems.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Associates Degree preferred.
  • Experience: Three (3) years of grounds experience with a minimum of one year in a supervisory role. Working experience in a college or university setting is preferred.
  • Skills/Training: Working knowledge of grounds maintenance equipment and procedures. Valid Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record
  • Proficiencies: Proficiency with Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Word, and Excel. Good oral and written communication skills required. Ability to work well with others throughout the campus community.
  • Scheduling Requirements: Ability to work flexible schedule during inclement weather, and special events that may require evening and Saturday and Sunday work hours. This position supports Cecil College’s main campus in North East, MD, its additional location in Elkton, MD. Travel between these locations is required.
  • Physical Demands: This is a working position requiring active participation in grounds maintenance duties. Must be able to lift and move up to a maximum of 50 lbs. The physical activity of this position includes, but is not limited to: climbing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, pulling, lifting, grasping, twisting and sitting.
  • Work Environment: The worker will be subject to dust, noise, fumes, and odors. The worker will be exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions. Safety equipment will be provided where needed and required to be worn or used.
