Purpose of Position:
The Underground CAS Product Manager is responsible for defining, building, and evolving Hexagon’s next-generation collision avoidance and proximity-detection systems for underground mining operations.
This role owns the product vision, roadmap, and requirements for underground CAS solutions, ensuring they deliver measurable safety improvements, seamless usability in harsh environments, and strong integration with Hexagon’s VIS, IMS, location-tracking, and autonomy-enabling technologies.
The position sits at the center of Hexagon’s mission to reduce underground vehicle-person collisions, equipment-equipment interactions, and situational-awareness gaps in GNSS-denied, low-visibility conditions, similar to expectations for CAS product managers in mining safety-critical contexts.
Major Areas of Responsibility:
Product Strategy & Vision
• Own and maintain the product vision, strategy, and long-term roadmap for Underground CAS solutions, aligned with Hexagon’s safety portfolio and underground automation trajectory.
• Define product scope, success metrics, safety outcomes, performance criteria, and required technology evolution (sensors, communications, algorithms).
• Evaluate needs around EMESRT guidelines and underground-specific critical control frameworks
Requirements & Solution Definition
• Translate customer needs, regulatory requirements, and safety risks into clear, testable product
requirements, spanning hardware, software, and analytics.
• Develop functional specifications for VIS/IMS integration (vehicle intervention, slowing, geofencing, collision-prediction logic).
• Define underground-specific requirements such as:
- operation in GNSS denied environments
- people tracking integration
- vehicle to vehicle & vehicle to infrastructure communication
- low visibility and dust tolerant sensing
- multi modal alerting in high noise areas
Product Development Leadership
•Work closely with engineering, architecture, user experience, and field testing teams to ensure product intent is clear and delivered effectively, following patterns used in CAS product leadership roles.
•Drive iterative development cycles, field pilots, and continuous feature expansion.
•Ensure underground CAS meets reliability, latency, and accuracy requirements under extreme environmental conditions.
Customer & Stakeholder Engagement
•Act as the voice of the customer, engaging underground operations, safety managers, OEMs, and technology partners to validate risk scenarios and operational workflows.
•Conduct site visits to underground mines (hard rock, potash, block cave, room and pillar) to understand real world hazards and gather insights for product improvements.
Market Analysis & Business Case Development
• Conduct competitive analysis of underground proximity-detection and CAS technologies.
• Track market and regulatory trends to guide roadmap decisions.
• Build investment cases for new features, hardware platforms, or strategic technology partnerships.
Product Performance & Lifecycle Management
• Monitor performance KPIs including detection accuracy, false alert rates, reliability, safety-effectiveness, and adoption metrics; consistent with expectations from safety-critical CAS PM roles.
• Own product lifecycle decisions including feature deprecation, platform migration, and next-generation hardware definition.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Partner with engineering, product specialists, program managers, go-to-market teams, and field service to ensure successful deployment and support.
• Collaborate with portfolio leadership to align underground CAS with integrated safety platforms including real-time location systems, traffic-management systems, and autonomy stack.
Knowledge and Experience - Required:
•5+ years' experience in product management, systems engineering, mining technology, or safety critical systems development, aligned with CAS PM industry expectations.
•Strong familiarity with underground mining operations, including:
- vehicle interactions
- narrow and confined spaces
- visibility challenges
- pedestrian equipment interactions
- proximity hazards
•Experience building or deploying sensor-based safety systems, embedded hardware, or communication heavy systems (Wi Fi, BLE, UWB, leaky feeder, mesh networks).
•Ability to translate safety outcomes, risk scenarios, and operational needs into product requirements.
•Proven cross functional leadership working with engineering, safety, operations, and OEMs.
Knowledge and Experience - Desired:
- Experience with EMESRT safety levels, ISO/IEC safety standards, or functional safety (SIL/ASIL).
- Background in underground traffic management, RTLS, CAS, proximity detection, or tele remote solutions.
- Familiarity with VIS/IMS systems, vehicle notification/intervention systems, or underground automation workflows.
- Interpersonal Skills
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, consistent with industry product manager expectations in mining technology roles.
- Ability to influence and make decisions with incomplete or evolving data.
- High degree of ownership, accountability, and customer empathy.
- Ability to translate complex technical concepts into operational value.
