Vice President, International Programs

International Social Impact | Hybrid in New York, NY | Full Time | From $160,000.00 to $180,000.00 per year

Job Description

Sesame Workshop’s International Social Impact department is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic senior professional for the role of Vice President, International Programs. They will be responsible for management, oversight and quality assurance for Sesame Workshop’s international programs, including those managed directly from New York, as well as defined program support roles for those managed from ISI country and program offices. This role will report to the Senior Vice President, International Social Impact. The role will be critical to ensuring and sustaining quality, reach, and impact of Sesame Workshop’s portfolio of International Social Impact programs.

The VP, International Programs will lead the Program Management function for ISI, as well as for specific multi-country initiatives that cut across geographies. As agreed across ISI and USSI, the role will lead in the design and launch of global initiatives that leverage Sesame Workshop’s US and international social impact capabilities to deliver joint programs. The role will require close collaboration with relevant teams across Sesame Workshop to ensure strong program and budget design, program start-up, implementation, and reporting and close-out. This includes clarifying and managing roles and responsibilities for quality program delivery across departments, such as Research, Education, Data and Impact; communications and marketing; philanthropic-development; finance and HR; as well as program leads in country and program offices.

The right candidate will have a proven track record of developing and providing leadership for cohesive, multi-country and multi-program teams to deliver high-quality programming across countries, organizational partners, and areas of expertise. Skills in data management, data visualization, financial tracking and modeling, and managing teams to results in those areas, are also critical for managing of the PM function. The VP for International Programs will be responsible for maintaining deep knowledge of the portfolio, positioning the team for growth in priority areas, and ensuring that it the portfolio ladders up to the department’s areas of strategic focus.

Specifically, the role will be responsible for:


  • Provide leadership of International Programs team, instilling intra-team communication and cohesiveness, sustaining an inclusive culture and supporting staff, particularly during times of organizational change
  • Attract, develop, coach, and retain high-performing team members, empowering them to elevate their level of responsibility, span of control, and performance.
  • Coordinate with finance and operations counterparts to develop and maintain a consistent picture of financial health and compliance, with attention to staff allocations and workforce planning across the PM group and ISI consultants.
  • Collaborate with key partners in production and REDI to ensure alignment and attainment of goals under the department strategy and organizational priority outcome areas.
  • Ensure strong internal communications and asset pipeline to enable internal visibility of program priorities, accomplishments, and opportunities for synergies across the organization.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Director, ISI Operations to ensure consistency and coherence across the global portfolio of country and program offices.

Business Development and Growth

  • Collaborate with Philanthropic Development team to ensure consistency in development of new business opportunities, collaborating with REDI teams to design program concepts, and develop financially sound program budgets, and ensure compliance with donor requirements.
  • Support development of new business plans for entry to new markets or expansion in existing markets; guide the implementation of approved new business opportunities in collaboration with ISI Operations and country offices.
  • Provide leadership for flagship initiatives that require cross-team collaboration or strategic partnership development, including areas such as clarifying terms of partnership, governance structures, staffing models, and monitoring plans.

Quality Assurance

  • Develop and manage guidelines for program quality and standard operating procedures to ensure consistent, high-quality project management.
  • Manage the use and further roll-out of WorkFront as a PM tool across all teams and offices to ensure consistency and coordination with business partners in key departments
  • Coordinate with Compliance and Security focal points to ensure that donor requirements are met and training is provided to PM group on emerging compliance guidance.
  • In the area of Program Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning, partner with REDI team to inform organizational metrics and ensure adherence to donor and partner requirements, as well as to support PM staff, consultants, and partners in operationalizing MEL tools for program quality.



  • 10+ years of relevant professional experience in relevant fields such as education, children’s programming, or international development in senior level general management roles
  • Master’s degree in a related field of study
  • Extensive experience with program design, resourcing, partnerships, and new business development, including in leadership roles cultivating and overseeing USAID mechanisms
  • Experience managing a team of program professionals for results on a portfolio of diverse, complex projects, including managing risk and setting future direction
  • Proven success building and managing tools and processes for use across multiple geographies and functional groups including fundraising, finance, and compliance, such as: program development and budgeting tools; pipeline to program management processes; workforce planning and allocation management; security and compliance tools; and shared PM software and tools.
  • Proven ability to problem-solve, prioritize, multi-task, and clearly communicate priorities and deadlines across functional teams
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (persuasive, credible, and polished communicator with excellent interpersonal and presentation skills)
  • Prior experience in a fast-paced, growth-oriented global organization with a demonstrated ability to work calmly and effectively under pressure
  • Integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed with demonstrated passion for Sesame Workshop's mission
  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally as needed
