The Position

The technical director will be responsible for supervise all areas of design and technical production except costumes. This includes design and implementation of construction, sound, and lighting. The TD will also teach two courses in technical design and collaborate with undergraduate students on 3-4 productions each year. Support of theater events outside of theatre production.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and fabrication of scenic design, lighting design, procurement/fabrication of all properties, and sound for 3-4 main stage productions, and occasional student productions
  • Supervision and maintenance of scene shop, theaters (main stage and studio) and related facilities including lighting and sound systems, and storage areas
  • Teaching, supervising and training students in technical design and production in class and workshop settings
  • Supervising theater spaces and providing technical support for college and community use beyond theatre productions, including concert shell installation
  • Responsible for teaching 2 courses a year in theatrical design. Typical courses include stagecraft, lighting design, scenic design.
  • Variable hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Reports to the Assistant Dean, School of Communication/Culture/Arts.

Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities:

  • MFA in Technical Direction, Theatrical Design, or related field
  • 3-5 years experience of undergraduate teaching, desired
  • Demonstrated technical production experience with knowledge of carpentry, rigging, and electrics
  • In lieu of a masters, professional experience will also be considered
