The Position

The Roanoke College Desktop Specialist successfully manages desktop/laptop security, technology systems and software in support of faculty/staff needs including offices, research labs, computer labs and virtual labs for the College. They work with the Network and Systems team to implement best practices in endpoint security. They ensure leading edge technology for integration in the curriculum. They ensure that the student staff has the skills through training and certifications to provide the services needed. They manage and direct new security & technology initiatives that enhance security, job performance, and instructional tools for the faculty/staff on College-owned desktops/laptops.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage desktop/laptop security, technology systems and software in support of faculty/staff needs including offices, research labs, computer labs and virtual labs
  • Develop and maintain workflow processes that ensure a high level of support for student-owned systems; including applicable certifications and recommended systems
  • Ensure secure, up-to-date, efficient, manageable desktop/laptop systems
  • Secure, maintain & deploy the VMware virtual lab environment through regular OS/software patching and image creation
  • Support innovation and cutting edge technology in the curriculum
  • Maintain up-to-date hardware inventory
  • Know and follow data information security and other college policies
  • Perform other related duties in support of the Information Technology office.

Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities:

  • 1-2 years of IT client service experience
  • 1-2 years IT desktop/laptop security & technical troubleshooting
  • 1 year providing technology training
  • Experience deploying security protocols/policies on desktop/laptop computers
  • Experience managing and designing technical systems
  • Experience implementing innovative/cutting edge security and technology solutions
  • Higher Education experience preferred
  • CompTIA Security+ & CompTIA A+ preferred
  • Dell and Lenovo Certifications preferred
  • VMware experience preferred
  • Effective communication with managers, coworkers and clients
  • Provides excellent client service and consulting
  • Solve problems creatively and keep up-to-date with security trends and new technologies
  • Regular attendance
