Substance Use Counselor

Job Description


POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for assessment and identification of client’s needs; coordination of the development of the treatment plan; facilitation of outpatient groups and individual counseling and coordination of the discharge planning process. The Substance use Counselor serves as the client’s guide, confidant, advisor, and advocate, assisting the client to identify problems that need to be addressed.

Description of duties and responsibilities

  1. Responsible for client’s treatment process as well as serving client with consultation and guidance throughout treatment.
  2. Meet with the client’s family and/or significant others as appropriate. Make referrals to community resources as needs are assessed.
  3. Coordinate the development of individualized Treatment Plans including identification of problems, goals, objectives, and treatment methods with the client.
  4. Documentation of regular progress notes to reflect progress in achieving treatment objectives.
  5. Provide screening and evaluation of substance use and provide recommendations for treatment.
  6. Teach patients coping mechanisms and best ways to prevent a relapse.
  7. Provide reports to update court on the progress of a treatment.
  8. Help client’s setup a support network required in overcoming an addiction.
  9. Track clients’ recovery process to identify the need for treatment plan adjustment.
  10. Counsel clients in individual or group sessions by listening to their stories, concerns or issues and providing feedback, including teaching them coping techniques.
  11. Work with other professional staff to collaborate on treatment methods and plans for patients and to assess suitability for counseling services or referrals as needed.
  12. Agree to and comply with all company policies and procedures as outlined in the employee handbook, including how to handle patient grievances, proper intake procedures, staff meeting requirements rules and regulations of the clinical records department, and general code of conduct.
  13. Serve as the primary group therapy facilitator.
  14. Participate in all required meetings.


MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

A Master’s degree in Human Services Field (education, nursing, criminal justice, recreational therapist, social work, psychology, human development) plus:


  1. A licensed or provisionally licensed qualified mental health professional (QMHP); or
  2. An individual holding the Co-Occurring Disorders Professional or Co-Occurring Disorders Professional/Diplomate credential from the Missouri Credentialing Board; or
  3. A non-licensed QMHP who meets the co-occurring counselor competency requirements established by the department; or
  4. A QAP who meets the co-occurring counselor competency requirements established by the department.

Must be credential in one or more of the following:

QUALIFIED ADDICTION PROFESSIONAL (QAP) –

An individual who meets the applicable training and credentialing required by the Missouri Credentialing Board for any of the following positions:

  • Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC)
  • Certified Reciprocal Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CRADC)
  • Certified Reciprocal Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CRAADC)
  • Certified Criminal Justice Addictions Professional (CCJP)
  • Registered Alcohol Drug Counselor-Provisional (RADC-P)
  • Registered Alcohol Drug Counselor (RADC)
  • Co-Occurring Disorders Professional (CCDP)

QMHP or Qualified Substance Professional (QAP) with minimum of 1 year experience.

Supervisor relationship: Does not supervise. The Outpatient Clinical Director supervise this employee.
