General Superintendent

The Grading Superintendent is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of grading operations for heavy highway and civil construction projects. This role ensures that all grading work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project plans, specifications, and regulatory requirements. The Superintendent leads field crews, coordinates with project managers, and ensures productivity and quality on-site.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee all grading operations, including excavation, embankment, subgrade preparation, and compaction.
- Interpret project plans, blueprints, and specifications to ensure proper execution of grading activities.
- Ensure all work is completed within budget, on schedule, and to the required quality standards.
- Conduct daily site inspections to monitor progress and enforce safety and quality control standards.
- Address unforeseen field conditions and implement corrective actions as necessary.
- Direct and supervise grading crews, equipment operators, and laborers.
- Assign tasks and provide clear instructions to ensure productivity and efficiency.
- Train and mentor field personnel, ensuring adherence to best practices and safety procedures.
- Conduct daily job site meetings to discuss work plans, safety measures, and potential challenges.
- Coordinate with the equipment manager to ensure proper maintenance and utilization of earthmoving equipment (e.g., dozers, graders, excavators, scrapers, compactors).
- Ensure accurate reporting of equipment hours, material usage, and workforce productivity.
- Monitor material deliveries and usage to prevent shortages or overages.
- Enforce company safety policies and OSHA regulations to ensure a safe work environment.
- Conduct job site safety inspections and toolbox talks.
- Investigate and report any accidents, near-misses, or safety violations.
- Ensure compliance with all environmental regulations related to grading and earthmoving activities.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and subcontractors to align project goals and progress.
- Provide daily reports on site activities, productivity, and any issues encountered.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, including grading logs, safety reports, and equipment usage.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 10 years in highway or civil grading construction, with at least 5 years in a supervisory role.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or degree in construction management is a plus.
- Strong knowledge of grading techniques, soil types, and compaction requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret civil plans, grading sheets, and specifications.
- Proficiency in using GPS and machine control grading systems is preferred.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing field conditions.
- OSHA 30, First Aid/CPR, and relevant heavy equipment certifications preferred.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, lift heavy objects, and stand for long periods.
