Position: Consumer Lending Manager

Department: Lending

Reports to: Chief Lending Officer

Position Summary

The Consumer Lending Manager is responsible for ensuring that consumer lending policies and procedures best serve the Credit Union and its Members and that it is in strict compliance with State and Federal lending laws and regulations. The Consumer Lending Manager will oversee the department with management of the day-to-day consumer loan operation, providing leadership, guidance, and coaching of the staff. The person will develop, recommend and implement lending policies and products as well as, monitor and analyze economic conditions affecting the loan department and loan portfolio performance in order to recommend appropriate action.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Ensures that member education is provided on a consistent basis

  • Identifies as well as works to eliminate root causes upon review of the monthly Visa re-issue report to identify risks and trends in existing portfolios

  • Participates in compliance, audits and other related enterprise-wide initiatives; and analyzes and completes regularly scheduled loan reports to develop procedures and reporting tools to optimize performance of consumer loan portfolio and service goals

  • Provides creative solutions and process improvements when formulating and maintaining loan procedures (for the consumer loan department) that is up-to-date with all current regulations and internal control requirements

  • Recommends, implements and manages all consumer lending-related programs and delivery channels (including indirect lending, online applications, debt protection products, collateral protection programs and, default insurance programs)

  • Exhibits a sense of urgency when researching and evaluating the feasibility of new lending products, and work to develop and implement plans for expansion of lending programs

  • Utilizes professional and friendly communication to ensure exceptional internal and external customer service when resolving member complaints

  • Demonstrates personal accountability by supporting the audit of loan files to ensure loan quality and adherence to consumer lending policies; ensuring appropriate staff training and adherence to policies and procedures; and that consumer loan policies, procedures, services, products, delivery channels and documentation meet federal and state regulations

  • Participates in Business Development by partaking in CommunityShare events, and coordinating and identifying business development activities to ensure additional exposure as the Bay Area’s Lender of Choice

  • Actively partners and collaborates with Branch and Service Center Management to ensure efficient and smooth lending delivery through branch and call center channels.

  • Displays high energy and engagement when facilitating consumer lending loan training (loan origination system and collateral protection program); leading Consumer Lending staff meetings; hiring; conducting employee performance evaluations and disciplinary actions; coaching the Consumer Lending staff

  • Demonstrates self-motivation by consistent review of all activities for compliance with established policies, procedures and regulations (Bank Secrecy Act / Anti-Money Laundering / Office of Foreign Assets Control regulations)

  • Takes initiative by staying abreast of current industry trends and competition; participating in annual training as required by the BSA/OFAC Compliance Officer; maintaining up-to-date knowledge of competitors’ rates, terms, products and other marketplace trends relating to consumer lending.

  • Displays Results Orientation by establishing and measuring service level standards of the team with metrics reporting and accountability measures; analyzing processes and workflows to enhance efficiencies and appropriate segregation of duties, and supervising the processing and funding of loans to assure compliance with policy and regulations

  • Committed to self-improvement by constant pursuit of training and development opportunities and shares expertise with others

  • Consistently meets deadlines by directing the work of key individuals in all consumer lending areas (to include underwriting, loan processing, loan documentation, and approval or denial of consumer loans) and when providing consumer lending content for monthly lending summary

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge in lending rules, regulations, practices and procedures with respect to consumer, mortgage and business lending

  • Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills, project management and coordination skills in order to achieve organizational goals and effective results with staff and with external vendors; 

  • Must possess high degree of confidentiality and ethical standards, strong problem-solving skills and ability to identify problems/issues, develop and evaluate options in order to implement solutions

  • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with staff and members in a professional, approachable and positive manner

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to plan, supervise and exercise effective leadership to the department

  • Technically savvy and experienced in managing a team and vendors, energetic, forward-thinking and creative individual with high standards and an appropriate professional image

  • Current with Federal and State laws and regulations to ensure compliance

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in business administration or finance from a four-year college or university and/or, equivalent combination of education, training and related work experience 

  • Seven (7) years of related experience in lending management required

  • Five (5) or more years at a management position in a financial institution preferred
