Dance Team Coach

Job Description

The Dance Team Coach oversees the Dance Team, plans and implements their auditions, training, and practices, and choreographs dance routines for competitions.  In addition, the Dance Team Coach coordinates game responsibilities for the team. The coach will serve during the academic year from around September 1 – April 30 and will be subject to annual renewal. Availability would require 3 late afternoons or evenings per week for about 2 hours each as well as some weekends. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with the Dance Team’s student leaders
  • Assist in on-campus recruiting, selecting, training, and retaining of dance team members
  • Conduct tryouts to ensure the dance team is up to standard
  • Plan and implement regular practices to include proper technique with an emphasis on safety
  • Teach skills in a sequential and appropriate progression from the most fundamental abilities to the more complex skills
  • Approve all dances that will be performed
  • Develop and implement performances for athletic contests (primarily basketball games) and other events
  • Represent the college by promoting good sportsmanship at all events
  • Inspect and maintain an accurate inventory of all equipment
  • Establish and appropriately enforce standards for the dance team members to follow
  • Attend all mandatory Club Sport coaches meetings
  • Foster an effective working relationship with the Club Sports office, the Cheerleading Team, and the Athletics Department
  • Keep an accurate record of hours worked and submit electronic timesheet when due
  • Adhere to all college and department policies and procedures while inspiring the student staff and participants to do the same

 Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Prior experience as a Dance Team coach or as a member of such a team
  • Knowledge in pom, hip hop, and jazz styles of dance
  • Exceptional communication and proven leadership skills
  • Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification or willingness to become certified.
