Landfill Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Solid Waste/Landfill | Caldwell, ID | Full Time | From $27.50 to $32.27 per hour

Job Summary

A Landfill Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy machinery used in landfill operations. This includes bulldozers, compactors, excavators, loaders, dump trucks, and other specialized landfill equipment. The mechanic ensures all equipment operates safely and efficiently to support daily landfill operations. This position must be able to work 10-hour days and variable shifts


Key Responsibilities

Maintenance & Repairs

  • Conducts maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on all landfill vehicles, heavy equipment, and related machinery.
  • Repairs hydraulic systems, drivetrains, suspensions, steering systems, HVAC systems, ventilation, emissions, and related components.
  • Perform engine tune-ups including computerized control systems
  • Test equipment after repairs to ensure proper functionality
  • Performs routine inspections to detect mechanical issues
  • Utilize diagnostic and electronic equipment with relevant software applications for assigned tasks
  • Identify worn-out parts and recommend replacements

Recordkeeping & Documentation

  • Maintain detailed service logs and reports on all repairs and maintenance
  • Orders parts and manages inventory for a wide range of equipment and vehicles as needed

Communication & Collaboration

  • Builds and maintains effective working relationships with coworkers, vendors, and equipment support teams.
  • Work with operators and managers to understand equipment issues
  • Provide recommendations on equipment operation and care

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs all duties in compliance with County and Department policies, procedures, and safety standards, as well as industry regulations and best practice
  • Performs as relief heavy equipment operator, as needed
  • Performs other related duties as required
  • Exhibit integrity, resourcefulness, and innovation in executing assigned tasks

Qualifications

Skills & Abilities

  • Methods, materials, tools, and standard practices in the automotive mechanic trade, including hydraulic and electrical systems, with a focus on heavy-duty maintenance and equipment.
  • Safety principles and best practices for heavy equipment and automotive repair, including the use of air-powered tools, lifts, and hoists
  • Read and understand maintenance and repair manuals for heavy equipment and automotive systems
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency is required: and
  • Associates degree in Votech or Heavy Equipment Mechanic is preferred;
  • At least five (5) years of technically related equipment repair and operation experience is required; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work

Special Qualifications

  • Idaho Drivers License with Class B CDL endorsement
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation

  • Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, strength, agility, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to lift/move up to 100 pounds, work under vehicles and in confined spaces, remove and replace parts for repair and replacement, and work in an automotive shop and landfill environment
