Under minimal supervision, the Senior Accountant is responsible in performing accounting functions that meet the needs of the Credit Union. This includes, but is not limited to: posting and reconciliation entries to the general ledger; investments; fixed assets; accounts payable; loan participation settlements/remittances; payroll processing and related activities; internal/external reporting; research and resolve discrepancies; analysis and reconciliation of detailed accounts; maintaining accurate, current and timely accounting records for the Credit Union; and provides the Credit Union Managers with information necessary for decision making. He/she will also assist with training of accounting personnel.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

•     Maintains a thorough understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), a broad mastery of accounting functions, and is technically adept at all facets of assigned accounting responsibilities

•     Consistently meets deadlines by taking a methodical and organized approach when completing daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual accounting reports and assignments

•     Identifies as well as works to eliminate root causes in order to reconcile and resolve discrepancies and variances with the financials

•      Meets deadlines when posting and reconciling entries in the general ledger, processing payroll and related activities, and preparing accurate accounting reports and summaries

•      Employs active listening skills and utilizes professional and friendly communication when sharing information, responding to information requests and participation in staff meetings

•      Actively partners and collaborates with the Controller and team regarding assigned activities, significant problems, assessing department effectiveness, developing strategies and discussing ideas to help the team achieve goals

•      Displays engagement by contributing positive feedback, sharing expertise and best practice to team discussions and projects

•      Demonstrates self-motivation and initiative by actively diagnosing, analyzing and solving complex problems that impede productivity and recommends at least two (2) sustainable solutions

•     Provides creative solutions and process improvements by demonstrating a keen eye for numerical detail and interpreting the significance behind the numbers

•      Shows initiative by demonstrating the ability to research or recommend accounting procedures for new business related activities and redefining the way a task is performed

•      Displays Results Orientation by consistently exceeding assigned goals and manages multiple tasks effectively

•      Demonstrates high energy and engagement in training of accounting personnel.

•      Actively partners and collaborates with managers in providing useful and informative reports and data, keeping them informed of area activities, any significant problems, and ensuring that the Credit Union’s financial position is accurately conveyed.

•     Participates in Business Development by partaking in CommunityShare events

•     May perform other duties as assigned


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

•      Must possess thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)

•      Thorough knowledge of Credit Union and industry related accounting practices and procedures and of  governmental regulations and reporting requirements to ensure compliance

•     Knowledge of related accounting principles, procedures and auditing functions

•      Technical understanding of automated accounting and other industry information systems

•     Understanding of Credit Union operations and information needs

•     Must possess effective verbal and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to communicate professionally at all levels

•     Must possess excellent interpersonal and organization skills

•     Ability to work with staff and members in a prompt, professional and approachable manner

•     Must possess excellent decision making skills by being proactive, solution-oriented and have the ability to work in an environment of flexible and changing work policies/procedures.

•     Demonstrated ability to research and recommend accounting procedures for new business related activities

•     Energetic, forward-thinking and creative individual with high standards and an appropriate professional image

•     Proven ability to appropriately manage sensitive and confidential information

•     Ability to effectively participate in team environment, as well as demonstrated ability to function independently

•     Demonstrates commitment to self-improvement by taking the initiative of learning new skills, systems and procedures as well as taking advantage of the continuous education opportunities within and outside of the Credit Union

•      Must be computer literate with proficiency in Accounting Systems and MS Office: Word, Excel, and Outlook

Background Education and Experience Requirements

•   Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from a four-year college or university

•    Three (3) or more years of related progressive accounting experience in a credit union, bank or financial institution

• Or, equivalent combination of education, training and experience with a two year degree and six (6) or more years of related progressive accounting experience

•      Ability to move within an office complex environment

  • Ability to write by hand and use keyboard, 10-key and mouse extensively to perform office functions

•     Ability to occasionally stand, kneel, crouch, bend, stoop, sit, walk, twist, turn and reach with hands and arms

•     Ability to occasionally lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds (supplies or equipment)

•      Work environment is indoors; majority of the time is spent sitting at a desk
