Substance Abuse Counselor/Navigator

Job Description

Summary: People’s Family of Corporations is seeking a Substance Abuse Counselor to provide opiate-addicted and other types of substance abuse treatment to adolescents and adults. Responsible for individual and group counseling, assessment, therapeutic intervention, developing treatment plans, ongoing follow up counseling and case management, treatment plan reviews, client advocacy, and a multi-tasker who is wonderful with clients! This role will offer substance abuse educational classes to clients and family members to assist them in recognizing problems and causal factors use disorders and developing healthy and alternative coping behaviors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Completing comprehensive substance use intake, orientation, assessment, write biopsychosocial assessment summaries, education, referral, record keeping, develop treatment planning, counseling, case management, crisis intervention and consultation for caseload and complete client progress reports and evaluations
  • Ability to prepare and maintain confidential, systematic, accurate documentation of client progress reports, services treatment records, and evaluations to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and accreditation standards
  • Coordinating and cooperating with local agencies and organizations necessary to expedite treatment for each client
  • Complete required paper and electronic documentation to include timely submission of daily, weekly and monthly reports
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, staff, service providers and the general public
  • Interviews and selects counseling theories and applies techniques to assist clients, family members, and others to gather information; explains program methods and objectives to obtain their cooperation in the treatment rehabilitation process. Assist clients with defining and achieving realistic goals
  • Customizes client counseling with regard to cultural, gender and lifestyle differences. Elicits solutions and decisions from client to determine treatment plan to implement. Matches member needs and/or problems to appropriate resources. Assists member in utilizing support systems and community resources available
  • Maintain an adequate caseload size to meeting productivity expectations
  • Represents the program to the community through outreach activities and educational programs
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and/or Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Marriage, Family Therapy, Psychiatric
  • Nursing or other related field
  • Current Associate Substance Abuse Counselor I or II (RASAC I OR RASAC II) and/or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LGSW)
  • Previous direct care experience in substance abuse treatment settings
  • A comprehensive understanding of clinical theories, modalities in treatment methodology, child abuse and neglect, child development, alcoholism, opiate-addicted and other types of substance abuse addiction and co-dependency, knowledge of men’s and women’s issues in recovery
  • Sound ethics in counseling required
  • Valid driver’s license
  • First Aid / CPR certification required
  • Must possess basic personal computer knowledge
