The Opportunity

LCPS Athletics Programs Director

Lighthouse Community Public Schools is looking for a LCPS Athletics Programs Director who is relentlessly committed to ensuring that traditionally underserved students achieve our mission of completing college and securing a career of choice. Lighthouse staff believe that this important mission is not only attainable; it is essential to transforming our Oakland community. The LCPS Athletics Programs Director will manage and lead all aspects of LCPS’ athletics programs across our schools allowing enabling an excellent athletics program that enables student athletes to compete within team sports and to access college and career of choice and become changemakers achieving LCPS’ Mission, Theory of Change, Graduate Profile, and Instructional Stances.

Role & Responsibilities:

Manage & Lead the Athletics Programs of Lighthouse and Lodestar

  • Lead and implement the vision for the LCPS athletics program across both campuses including league and intramural team play at the high school level and at the middle school level

  • Serve as the face and leader of athletics programs’ excellence internally and externally

  • Forge partnerships on behalf of the school that will further the school’s mission and offerings for athletes

  • Participate in all league calls

  • Plan and participate in fundraising efforts, as needed

  • Attend all BACSAC AD and coaches meetings

  • Attend appropriate CIF meetings and on-line trainings as needed

  • Build opportunities for elementary and middle school sports teams and play/practice through community organizations and area charter schools in conjunction with Deans and MS Youth Leadership Development Program Managers

  • Plan and oversee any summer athletics program opportunities to support athletes and athletics program goals

  • Ensure the safety of all student athletes and coaching staff, including participation in all appropriate safety trainings and following & monitoring school-adopted concussion and other safety protocols

  • Participate in LCPS and site-based school staff meetings as required

LCPS K-12 Athletic Program Administrative, Policy & Communications Duties

  • Monitor athletes’ eligibility to play and participate in collaboration with Site Instructional Admin (Principals and APs, who have final say on eligibility)

  • Create eligibility requirements policy in written form to outline academic, behavioral, and team expectations and the response should any student not be able to meet said requirements

  • Monitor athletes medical clearance and insurance

  • Hold students-family meetings prior to the start of each season to review expectations, eligibility, safety and student/family game day expectations with Head of School

  • Send rosters of athletes to relevant staff and teachers weekly to note who will and will not be participating in games during the week

  • Communicate regularly and clearly with parents and faculty re: athletes, events, etc.

  • Serve as site administrator for all sporting events, includes reporting to officials

  • Schedule all athletic events, practices, and make up competitions, as needed

  • Research, purchase, inventory, and monitor equipment and uniforms within school budget parameters

  • Coordinates public transportation of athletes, as needed

  • Support student athletes engaging in the college application process in terms of appropriately documenting their achievements and participation in LCPS (or other) athletics programs and navigating any scholarship or recruitment opportunities to which they may be eligible

  • Work with the HR Manager to identify appropriate safety trainings for athletics’ programs staff to ensure the safety of all students and staff participating in LCPS athletics programs.

  • Administer Physical Fitness Testing in collaboration for 5th-12th grade students in collaboration with Assistant Principals and Operations Associates at both sites

Coaching Supervision and Coaching Duties

  • Oversee and supervise all LCPS approved coaches:

    • Hire and train all coaches for Lighthouse HS and Lodestar HS after determination of coaching need

    • Work with Director of Finance and Director of Talent as needed to set appropriate budget, document necessary employee requirements, and ensure payment of all hired coaches, on a regular basis

    • As acting supervisor for all coaches, hire, evaluate, and discipline coaches, coordinating and cooperating with primary supervisors in the instance where the coach also serves in another capacity as an LCPS employee

    • Ensure all coaches and athletes comply with league rules and codes of conduct, including all LCPS policies for students and staff, including Staff/Student Interaction and Harassment and Discrimination policies

    • Facilitate meetings of on-site coaches and athletes as needed

    • Assist coaches as needed

  • Foster team cultures of respect, perseverance, and celebration

  • Coach up to three seasons of sports teams each yearas needed

Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Time Commitment

  • This position is 1.0 FTE (full-time salaried exempt) and follows a 12-month (233 day) work year with significant student-free days for professional learning and collaboration with colleagues and interaction with families and approximately 5 weeks of holidays/breaks built into the school calendar and then an additional 10 days of PTO yearly to be used during summer or as otherwise approved by supervisor.

  • Common Building Hours: Exact hours may vary to comply with oversight of athletics programs on days when games and athletics programming goes past 5:00pm (e.g. 9:00-6:00pm). Exact schedule to be determined in conjunction with supervisor. Some time worked on weekends and evenings required and may be flexed with other time during school year or as part of summer schedule.

Compensation

Commensurate with experience. Competitive benefits package and generous time off and vacation policies. Starting Salary range is $80-110K with additional stipends up to $12K available for taking on additional coaching duties beyond those outlined in JD.

This position reports to: Director of Student Services, in collaboration with our 6-12 Principals.
