Job Description

Computational Design Specialist - Expression of Interest

Design Technology | Sydney | Full Time |

Job Description

Grimshaw is an international architectural practice founded in London in 1980, with studios across Europe, North America, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. We are known for technically thoughtful, human-centred work spanning major transport infrastructure, cultural buildings and urban masterplans. Computational design has long been central to how we work, with our Design Technology team playing a key role in developing and embedding that capability across the practice.

We are seeking Expressions of Interest for a Computational Design Specialist to join our Sydney Design Technology team. This role supports project teams in the strategic application of computational design, contributing to project discussions, enabling advanced workflows, and promoting appropriate tools and methodologies. Alongside hands-on project support, you will help shape and advance the studio’s Design Technology strategy, develop and document best practice, and strengthen wider computational design capability across the practice. You will bring deep technical knowledge, communicate complex ideas clearly, and may represent the studio externally.

This role suits someone who enjoys working collaboratively, is comfortable moving between projects, and gets satisfaction from helping colleagues solve problems and build new skills.

WHAT THE ROLE INVOLVES

Day to day

  • Supporting project teams with computational design workflows, troubleshooting, guidance and hands-on help
  • Run environmental analysis studies (eg daylight simulations, solar radiation studies) on projects
  • Running training sessions in Rhino, Grasshopper, Dynamo and programming languages
  • Advising teams on when and how computational approaches can add value
  • Documenting workflows and helping to maintain global CD standards
  • Continually and proactively seeking to identify opportunities to improve existing workflows or capabilities.

Across the studio and practice

  • Contributing to Australian Design Technology initiatives and attending regular team meetings
  • Documenting exemplar work, sharing knowledge and collaborating with the wider global CD team
  • Contributing to global standards, resources and content libraries
  • Represent Grimshaw Design Technology externally through events, online presence and presentations.

ABOUT YOU

We are looking for someone with solid computational design experience and a genuine interest in how these tools can improve the way architects and engineers work. You don't need to tick every box below. If you feel you're a good fit for the role, we encourage you to apply.

You will need

  • Advanced proficiency in Rhino and Grasshopper
  • A degree in architecture, engineering, computational design, architectural technology, or a related field

It would be great if you also have

  • At least three years of experience applying computational design in practice
  • Working knowledge of at least one programming language (C#, Python, Java, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Grasshopper plugins such as Kangaroo, Ladybug or Honeybee
  • Experience with automation, data-driven workflows, or AI-assisted design tools
  • Knowledge of Revit, Dynamo, GIS or Climate Studio
  • Knowledge of interoperability, particularly between Revit and Rhino
  • Authorised Rhino Trainer certification
  • A background in architectural practice

How you work matters too

  • You communicate clearly and can adapt how you explain things to different audiences
  • You are collaborative and find it rewarding to help colleagues build their skills
  • You approach problems methodically and know when to step back and ask questions
  • You are organised and comfortable juggling more than one project at a time
