Computational Design Manager

Position overview

Grimshaw’s New York studio is seeking a passionate and talented Computational Design Manager to provide leadership to our North American CD team and drive forward an exciting agenda of computation and innovation across a portfolio of industry leading projects.

The role will involve promoting the strategic application of computational design in both project and practice scenarios, drawing on a strong experience in the professional application of computational approaches. The Studio CD Manager will also represent the North American studios’ CD team as part of global Design Technology strategies and initiatives. This position report to the Director of Design Technology.

The Studio CD Manager will work closely with the studio computational team, and alongside other studio BIM and technology staff to deliver coordinated solutions, representing Grimshaw Design Technology both internally and externally. This person will contribute to the overall Design Technology agenda, including research and exploration into new technologies and innovations in the industry.

Skills and qualifications

  • The ability to clearly articulate advanced computational concepts in an easily understandable manner

  • A strategic approach to the application of computational design in a professional context

  • A strong attention to detail

  • Initiative and proactive working methodology

  • Degree in architecture or computational design-based qualification

  • 7+ years of proven computational design experience in a professional setting

  • Experience managing a small team in a hybrid environment

  • Ability to work with architectural and design staff at all levels

Required technical skills

  • Advanced knowledge and experience of 3D modelling software such as McNeel Rhinoceros

  • Advanced knowledge and experience of visual programming software such as Grasshopper and Dynamo

  • Experience with programming languages such as C#, Knowledge of Python is advantageous

  • Experience with Autodesk Revit is advantageous, as well as interoperability between Rhino and Revit.
