User Experience Designer (UX Designer)

Product Development | Austin, TX | Full Time

Job Description

The User Experience Designer will play a central role in developing the UX design of Watermark’s platforms, which align to the company’s mission of empowering institutions with better data to improve learning. As a member of the UX team, the designer will clearly plan a path forward for building intuitive, easy-to-use, innovative solutions. As part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary product team, you’ll help set the vision for the end-to-end user experience and work hands-on to turn that vision into reality.

Responsibilities:

  • Consistently consider how designs support team vision and goals and the broader product vision and company objectives
  • Harness a variety of user research and exemplar review techniques to identify and analyze user problems
  • Consider and account for multiplicity of often conflicting needs of diverse user groups within the education industry when designing complete user experiences
  • Design user experiences that leverage a proficient understanding of information architecture, multi-step, and cross-platform flows
  • Incorporate best practices for accessible design in order to ensure an equal experience for all users
  • Balance existing visual and UX patterns with platform-specific patterns to ensure a consistent, intuitive experience
  • Effectively document, deliver, and articulate the expected design and user experience through sketches, flow charts, wireframes, interactive prototypes, storyboards, journey maps, and other UX artifacts 
  • Work in a collaborative team of product owners, engineers, and fellow designers to explore creative solutions to user problems
  • Provide direct and impactful constructive feedback in Design Critiques
  • Validate that workflows are easy to use and meet end-user needs by collecting feedback from end users through formal and informal usability testing techniques throughout the lifecycle of the project as needed
  • Work closely with UI Designers to incorporate the branded UI style guide and represent the Watermark brand; Demonstrate understanding of layout, typography and visual hierarchy
  • Effectively collaborate with product managers, software developers, clients, and other subject matter experts throughout the product lifecycle
  • Be an ambassador for the power of design, always willing to effectively explain why you’ve done what you’ve done and how design decisions are made to a variety of audiences

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in HCI, Human Factors, Design, or a related discipline (Master’s preferred)
  • Online portfolio of recent UX work showcasing design skills
  • Proficiency in conducting user research and working with product managers to identify user needs that are aligned with business goals
  • Strong conceptualization and visual communication ability
  • Experience with interaction and interface design patterns and standard UCD methodologies
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a collaborative environment where your teammates’ critiques are essential to inform your iterative process
  • Proficiency in Adobe Suite and an industry standard wireframing tool (Axure preferred)
  • Solid understanding of visual design principles
  • Sound knowledge of web and mobile technologies, including familiarity with HTML, CSS and other modern front-end languages
  • Strong iteration abilities, including some familiarity with Agile software development
  • Demonstrated understanding of web accessibility and how to design accessible applications for web and mobile environments
  • Demonstrated ability to work with multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills
