Director of Product Design
As leader of the Product Design team at Watermark, you will sit on the product leadership team and partner closely with cross-functional leaders in product management and engineering to execute against our vision for transforming higher education with better data to improve learning. We are building new products and unifying existing products into one powerful Educational Intelligence suite to give educational leaders, faculty, and students the insight they need to make better decisions. You will convey the vision for our products’ user experience (both short and long term), articulate tradeoffs, get stakeholder buy-in, and ultimately execute by leading a team of designers towards incremental delivery on the vision. You’ll be a supportive people manager overseeing and mentoring product designers and other leaders in the team, ensuring they are empowered to do extraordinary work.
How You’ll Lead
Collaborate with product leadership, engineering leadership, and key stakeholders to define the holistic and future-facing vision for the Watermark suite of products and platform ensuring alignment and consensus around product design.
Be the voice of the user; Evangelize user-focused design across the organization in stakeholder meetings and ensure we’re building an experience our users love across products.
Build, manage, and scale the Watermark product design team; Grow and mentor a well-rounded team across strengths, disciplines, and seniority. Define clear goals and empower them to work collaboratively and autonomously, while delivering thoughtful and impactful designs.
Streamline and develop internal design processes, including user testing and research, wireframing, prototyping, workflows, storyboarding, design critiques, and more; Ensure the team’s workflows are allowing them to deliver their best work and set up to scale.
Build strong partnerships and cross-team workflows with product, engineering, operations, marketing, and client facing teams to ensure we’re aligned on initiatives and delivering an engaging, user-focused product.
Cultivate a culture of innovation that welcomes new ideas; Work closely with product stakeholders to improve product releases and push the boundaries of design.
Required Skills & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Design, HCI, Human Factors, or a related discipline. (Master’s preferred) or equivalent practical experience
10+ years leading UX / product design strategy
5+ years leading a team of designers; including experience managing other people leaders
Experience designing in a B2B organization with a SaaS enterprise product
Experience building, developing and scaling design teams and processes; value a culture that appreciates diversity of thought and work-life balance
Strong creative vision with an understanding of business objectives, exemplified in a rich portfolio
Demonstrated experience using research and data to drive decisions
Experience creating products to be inclusive across the range of human diversity with respect to ability, language, and culture
Experience working with and growing established design systems; experience establishing a new design system is a plus
Ability to thrive in fast paced agile environments; experience working in EdTech and working with distributed remote teams is a plus
*Location: Austin is preferred but we will consider remote candidates as well.
