Battle Buddy VPAN

Battle Buddy provides a high quality, coordinated network of care that is easily accessible for Los Angeles County service members, veterans and their families through an enduring, world-class Veteran Peer Access Network (VPAN). VOALA will deploy trained veteran and military family peers throughout Los Angeles County to connect veterans and their families to critical resources including housing, mental health care, substance abuse treatment, job placement, and legal services.  Our program’s wraparound services include the following: peer to peer assistance, transportation, moving assistance, emergency food boxes, hygiene kits, emergency financial assistance, and VA benefits linkage and information.  In addition, to ensure best practices the team tailors care coordination to all veterans by following up on a scheduled agreed basis throughout their journey to ensure successful connection of services.

JOB SUMMARY AND PURPOSE

The Veteran Squad Leader will lead and manage the Battle Buddy team to ensure fullest use of the Veteran Peer Access Network.  The Squad Leader is a trained and certified advocate who performs a wide range of tasks to assist peers in regaining independence within the community and mastery over their own recovery/reintegration process and will supervise and provide direct support to a team of Peer Support Specialist/Battle Buddies.  Duties will include direct assistance to client (Veterans and Milfam), and team leadership.  Overseeing Peer staff that serve as “service integrators” and ensure integration with the County’s Coordinated Entry System for housing (CES), U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and other Service Planning Area (SPA) based systems.  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Train, coach, and manage service team on program requirements, tools, and methods to meet those requirements
    • Effectively communicate program expectation to team members and senior management in a timely and clear fashion
    • Delegate tasks and responsibilities to appropriate personnel
    • Providing on-the-job training, mentor new and established employees, and support the provision of services to clients.
  • Assign and distribute work, review work for accuracy and completeness, return assignments with recommendations for proper completion, and provide assistance with managing workloads
  • Oversee referrals connecting veterans and their families to critical resources including housing, mental health care, substance abuse treatment, job placement, and legal services
  • Resolve client and advocate problems encountered during daily operations and determine appropriate solutions
  • Assess clients for participation in various government benefit programs.
  • Act as advocate for client before various agencies and service providers.
  • Identify additional services to which participants will be referred (such as housing, employment, education) and connect participants to those services through VOALA programming or community service providers and partners.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to pass a fingerprint clearance, background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment and education verifications

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work (or related discipline) or a combination of relevant education and experience (4 years).
  • All VPAN  staff must complete 75 hours of evidence-based training(s) The training will include but not limited to:
    1. Veteran Administration Approved Peer Certification
    2. Risk Mitigation
    3. The Veteran Family Peer Navigator model training provided by UCLA
  • Within 90 days of hire attend and complete 2-week VA Peer Certification training

EXPERIENCE:

  • 3 years of supervisory experience in a social services organization (leading programs, projects, or staff), or similar leadership experience
  • At least two years of experience providing social services to Veterans or MilFam.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of available benefits resources in the area
  • Demonstrated knowledge of issues with recovery from mental health and/or substance abuse issues
  • Knowledge of the barriers to housing
  • Strong knowledge of case management ethics, HIPAA, Programmatic standards of operation and clinical engagement, clinical documentation methods, client focused ideology.

TECHNOLOGY SKILLS:

  • Basic Microsoft operating system navigation, outlook, word, excel, power-point, internet browser.
  • Database Experience

  • Proven Expertise in relevant subject matter
  • Able Public Speaker
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work comfortably with target population
  • Conflict Management Skills
  • Must be flexible and willing to work weekends/evenings as necessary
  • Able to provide valuable expertise to senior management while mentoring junior staff
  • Able to organize and schedule team’s caseload, support efforts of subordinates towards program goals
  • Ability to coach and mentor staff
  • Demonstrated ability to perform under circumstances of possible emotional stress and conflict, including dealing with un-cooperative clients.
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, with or without reasonable accommodation, including meeting qualitative and quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.

INTERPERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Client- focused, Prompt, collaborative/team player, regular attendance, adaptable, communicator, organized, consistent, compassionate, conflict resolution.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • DVA Certified
  • Military background and/or have had immediate family member(s) who served in the U.S. military strongly preferred
  • Experience with LA County’s Coordinated Entry System for housing (CES), U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and other Service Planning Area (SPA) based systems.  
  • Familiar with HMIS data system
  • Understanding and demonstrated ability to navigate governmental benefit programs preferred
  • Ability to work with people from various backgrounds and/or limited English capabilities
