Volunteers of America of Greater Los Angeles is a large, national not-for-profit organization founded in 1896. We provide a variety of social services to Los Angeles area communities such as Head Start programs, Upward Bound college prep programs, veterans’ services, homeless shelters, low-income housing program as well as drug and alcohol rehabilitation. Upward Bound is one of seven federally-funded TRIO programs.  The Upward Bound program was established to provided fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance.  The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits.  Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree.  The goal is to create the rate at which participants complete the secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of post-secondary education.


Pay Rate: $14 per hour

Under the general supervision of the Project Director and Educational Advisors, the specific duties and responsibilities of the Science Tutor shall include, but not limited to:

  • Provide academic assistance to assigned tutees, either in a group or individually
  • Establish liaison with the teacher and work under the teacher's direction to assist the student
  • Help students develop the study skills necessary for academic success (i.e., time management, note-taking, textbook reading, test-taking skills)
  • Assist students in achieving a better understanding of specific subject material and in improving academic capabilities in designated areas
  • Assist program participants in the completion and review of homework and in-class assignments
  • Maintaining neat, up-to-date, accurate, and complete records of student contacts and progress
  • Meet with Project Director and/or Educational Advisor weekly to ascertain participants progress and address any concerns


  • Must be a rising junior, senior or graduate student currently enrolled in college and in good academic standing
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 with knowledge in the following subject areas: AP Chemistry, Biology, AP Physics,
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment Monday-Friday
  • Establish liaison with the high school teachers to assist student with assignments
  • Ability to work with low-income, first generation high school students
  • Experience with tutoring, advising, or peer counseling preferred
