Volunteers of America of Greater Los Angeles is a large, national not-for-profit organization founded in 1896. Upward Bound is one of seven federally-funded TRiO programs.  The Upward Bound program was established to provided fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance.  The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits.  Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree.  The goal is to create the rate at which participants complete the secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of post-secondary education.


Pay Rate: $14 per hour

The Mathematics Tutor will help develop and implement enrichment activities to enhance the participant's academic and social development.  Other assistance might include; creating engagement actives and leading math and/or college preparatory workshops. 

  • Provide academic assistance to assigned tutees, either in a group or individually
  • Help students develop the study skills necessary for academic success (i.e., time management, note-taking, textbook reading skills)
  • Coordinates daily homework assistance and tutoring program for students
  • Monitor the use of tutoring resources (laptops, calculators, books, etc) during tutoring session
  • Communicate with Lead Tutor, Educational Adviser and Director concerning the participants'
  • Establish liaison with the teacher and work under the teacher's direction to assist the student


  • Must be a rising junior, senior, or graduate student currently enrolled in college and in good academic standing
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge in trigonometry or calculus and have mastery of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and basic mathematical concepts
  • Must have a 3.5 GPA or higher in subject area of Algebra I through Calculus and Statistics
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment Monday - Friday
  • Professional or personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting participants
  • Ability to work with low-income, first generation high school students
  • Experience with tutoring, advising, or peer counseling preferred
