Volunteers of America of Greater Los Angeles is a large, national not-for-profit organization founded in 1896.  We provide a variety of social services to Los Angeles area communities such as Head Start programs, Upward Bound college prep programs, veterans' services, homeless shelters, and low-income housing as well as drug and alcohol rehabilitation.  Learn more at

Program Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) Monitors are responsible for monitoring the facility and residents, make available knowledge of the 12-step process and generate an atmosphere of mutual self-respect and cooperation.The program is intended to motivate participants toward reduction of harm associated with substance abuse and past non-compliance with treatment and other recommendations.


The AOD Monitor:

  • Provides general oversight to assure that safety and well-being of program participants.
  • Oversees front desk operations including answering phones, completing phone intakes, monitoring front door, handling crisis intervention, and other required tasks.
  • Provides respectful reminders and prompts to participants regarding house rules and personal attention to activities of daily living
  • Communicates with case management and clinical team about violations and participant non-compliance for handling by designated staff
  • Maintains check-in/out procedures with residents; accounts for all residents while on VOALA property
  • Performs bed checks and monitors surveillance cameras
  • Responds to emergencies by contacting ambulance, police, program manager, or other parties as warranted


  • Must be registered or certified by an approved accrediting certified body
  • Must have completed module 1 from American Society of Addiction Medicine
  • High school diploma (or GED/High School Equivalence Certificate)
  • At least 1 year in residential treatment setting preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills

Additional Preferred:

  • At least 1 year employment background in mental health, substance use disorder recovery or homelessness preferred
  • If recovering substance user, must have at least 3 years of sobriety
  • Willing to work with substance abuse clients, mental health, LGBTQ and HIV/AIDS
  • Understanding of harm reduction (non-abstinence) approach with participant substance use helpful
  • Able to read and write English
