Payee Specialist – DHS - (SPA 3 West Covina)

The Payee Specialist provides payee services to mentally/physically disabled clients by assisting them with the budgeting of their Supplemental Social Security and/or Social Security income or other benefits they are receiving while supporting the payee specialists with their case load and clients.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide payee support services to the mentally ill, homeless or near homeless, physically disabled and aging populations to assist them with the budgeting of their Supplemental Social Security and/or Social Security income, and other benefits one may be entitled to as their Representative Payee as recognized by the Social Security Administration
  • Data entry to E-Guardianship as well as HMIS
  • Use benefits received for client to meet current needs with food, clothing and shelter
  • Ensure clients bills are paid on time
  • Provide proper accounting to Social Security for the use of client’s benefit funding
  • Responsible for the intake, processing and explaining of the Payee Services Program to the respective client
  • Process and mail all checks that need to be written for that particular day to ensure clients’ bills are paid in a timely manner
  • Responsible for completing and filing all necessary paperwork from the Social Security Administration, including yearly Representative Payee Reports
  • Maintain accurate client notes and complete monthly budgets for each client to show how income will be distributed
  • Assist accountants with accounting duties as requested
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Background and Skills:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in social services, business, public relations, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Experience:

  • Must have minimum one year of experience working with homeless and mentally ill populations
  • Must have minimum one-year experience customer service
  • Demonstrated experience working with vulnerable populations
  • Experience multi-tasking and meeting multiple deadlines at once

  • Ability to handle budgets, finances and sensitive information
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to exercise patience, understanding, creativity, and flexibility
  • Ability to work a regular schedule provided by your direct supervisor
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and present data contained in those records in a timely manner
  • Competent user of all MS Office Suite applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

Preferred Skills for this Position:

  • Accounting software experience, preferably E-Guardianship
  • Knowledge of communities where Payee Services are provided
  • HMIS knowledge preferred
  • Experience as a Payee Specialist
