Supportive Services for Veteran Families

Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) promotes housing stability to homeless or at–risk–of–becoming homeless Veterans and their families. The goal of the SSVF program is to provide clients with the skills necessary to maintain long term, independent living. SSVF is a short-term crisis intervention program, with services to include case management, housing and financial counseling, and assistance in obtaining benefits and services. For both individual Veterans and those with dependents.

JOB SUMMARY AND PURPOSE

The Outreach Specialist is responsible for promoting the program throughout the surrounding areas, targeting low-income households who are at risk of becoming homeless or are homeless and in need of housing stability.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Job duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintain and build partnerships and coalitions with other community and government agencies
  • Provides street outreach, engagement, crisis stabilization, trauma-informed case management, and referral services for clients and their families
  • Conducts initial street screenings, immediate needs assessments, and crisis stabilization
  • Assists in developing relationships and linkages with services, and maintaining accurate records of participant progress
  • Develop, perform, and assist with workshops pertaining to household needs
  • Assists program staff in integrating development strategies and other evidence-informed practices to provide a holistic service approach including providing life skills through “teachable” moments
  • Provide crisis intervention if needed, and make referrals to appropriate community resources
  • Monitor and maintain complete client records, daily activity logs, mileage logs, HMIS, and other reports as directed
  • Screen and evaluate households for eligibility of services
  • Interview clients for emergency assistance and determine eligibility
  • Conduct crisis intervention as necessary
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Valid California driver’s license, insurance, and/or reliable mode of transportation

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working in the homelessness field, with veterans, or related fields 

TECHNOLOGY SKILLS:

  • Proficiency with computers and Microsoft operating system navigation, office, outlook, word, excel, power-point, and internet browser

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle
  • Must be willing to travel/drive company vehicle to various locations
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including but not limited to Words, Excel, and Outlook
  • Flexibility to work holidays, nights, and weekends as needed


INTERPERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Social Services, public administration, public health or related field
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish (written and verbal)
  • Knowledge and experience working with and using HMIS software or programs
  • Knowledge and experience working with and using database software or programs
  • U.S. Veteran or experience working with veterans, people in recovery and/or homelessness individuals
