This is an As-Needed Position with multiple available openings for the morning, swing, and graveyard shifts.

The Barracks Harm Reduction

The Barracks II Harm Reduction program provides residential support services to Veterans with serious mental illnesses and/or substance abuse histories who are transitioning into permanent housing through a 3-month rehabilitation program with low requirements and restrictions in an effort to engage and motivate them toward a reduction of harm associated with their substance abuse and past noncompliance with treatment and recommendations.  


The Monitor is responsible for monitoring the activities of clients of the shelter/center to ensure compliance with program rules, policies, and expectations. The monitor is also responsible for ensuring the safety of clients and the security and sanitation of the program.


  • Provides reminders and prompts to veterans about respecting house rules and taking care of their ADLs (activities of daily living e.g. showering, eating, etc.) using respectful language, and refraining from punishment.
  • Informs case managers and clinical team about rule violations and non-compliance and allows designated staff to counsel the individual on the matter and apply aversive consequences.
  • Maintains and enforces check in/out procedure with residents and accounts for all clients' whereabouts on property.
  • Performs hourly bed checks to ensure accountability and client safety.
  • Monitors camera surveillance at all times.
  • Responds to emergencies by contacting police, hospital, and program manager.
  • Monitor operations at the front desk including answering the phone and completing telephone intakes, providing referrals, assisting with client requests, monitoring front door, client medication (after hours/weekends), crisis intervention, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.



  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Must be over the age of 18 years old.


  • High school diploma (or GED/High School Equivalence Certificate).


  • 6 months in the security field or 6 months working with the target population, or a combination of both totaling 6 months of experience.


  • Knowledge of the local community and the various services provided within the community that can be helpful for clients.


  • Basic computer and Microsoft operating system navigation, including Outlook, Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint;
  • Basic Database entry and use.


  • Ability to communicate orally and in written English.
  • Ability to use computer to input and retrieve routine data.
  • Ability to perform under circumstances of possible emotional stress and conflict, including dealing with un-cooperative clients.
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment such as a computer, telephone, monitor, printer, etc.


  • Have a client centered approach to customer services for the disadvantaged.
  • Prompt, collaborative/team player, adaptable, communicator, organized, consistent, and compassionate.
  • Respectful methods for reminding veterans about expectations and rules without engaging in argumentative behavior.


  • 1 year of experience working in fields of mental health, substance abuse treatment, and/or homelessness.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish (written and verbal).
  • If a recovering alcohol and/or drug user, you must have at least 1 year of continuous sobriety.
  • Experience with administering prescription medications and drug/alcohol usage testing.
  • 1 year of experience in residential treatment setting.
  • U.S. Army Veteran or experience working with U.S. Army Veterans.
