Hollywood Veteran’s Center
A sober–living residential facility for Veterans of OIF/OEF who suffer from severe levels of difficulty adjusting to civilian life. The goal is to help Veterans obtain permanent housing, financial security, and a personal support system through transitional housing, case management, and financial counseling.
HVC clinical treatment program have been serving veteran men since 2010. Meaning that veterans checking into the center commit to treatment for mental health and/or substance abuse issues. The program consists of a total of 48 beds, with 6 (2-men) rooms, and 36 single rooms. For the most part, we serve Iraqi, Afghanistan, and Operation New Dawn veterans. Services provided by HVC are aimed at helping residents get back on their feet. Specifically, we help veterans with the main goal of attaining permanent housing, but also work on goals such as employment, education, and family reunifications.
JOB SUMMARY AND PURPOSE
The Monitor is responsible for monitoring the activities of clients of the shelter/center to ensure compliance with program rules, policies, and expectations. The monitor is also responsible for ensuring the safety of clients and the security and sanitation of the program.
The monitor division is part of the clinical treatment at HVC, which requires monitors to maintain continuous communications and reporting regarding resident program activities and/or behavior.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide security to residents by physically walking and patrolling in and around the facility.
- In addition to documenting and reporting, monitors buzz residents into the building after they ring the bell, and then greet them as they enter.
- Monitor assists the Program Manager with maintaining safety and cleanliness of the facility.
- Monitor provides support for facility residents and treats residents with dignity and respect.
- Monitors clients to ensure they are safe and program compliant. This may include asking residents to perform their chores and/or attend mandated groups.
- Answers telephones, checks medication and sign out log books, and types of shift reports of activities and/or incidences that occurred while on duty.
- Conducts hourly walk through of the facility, and room inspections, bed checks, and urinalysis and breathalyzer tests as needed.
- Maintains cleanliness of the facility by physically sweeping, mopping, and other forms of upkeep in order to turn over a clean facility to the relieving monitor and keep a professional looking work environment.
- Handles resident meals, signs for deliveries, issues resident mail, and ensures that packing slips and invoices are filed.
- Oversees resident medication compliance and reports non-compliance to resident’s case manager, and program manager.
- Other duties as assigned by the Program Manager.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
- High school diploma (or GED/High School Equivalence Certificate).
- Valid CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) Certification.
- Valid First Aid Certification.
- Valid Food Handlers Card.
- 6 months in the security field or 6 months working with the target population, or a combination of both totaling 6 months experience.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in clerical or direct services type employment.
- Knowledge of veteran population demographics, challenges, strengths, and available services.
- Basic knowledge of Housing policies such as Housing First and Harm Reduction.
- Ability to focus on residents’ strengths and the ability to help client identify these strengths.
- Desire and ability to be of service to others, by treating them with compassion and respect.
- Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to do basic arithmetic and/or use of a calculator.
- Ability to use email systems such as Outlook, for communications regarding resident and facility care.
SKILLS and ABILITIES.
- Strong written and verbal communication to understand and communicate professionally via phone, email, and in person.
- Ability to read and write in the English language to log data and complete forms.
- Ability to set priorities, handle multiple tasks, and meet established deadlines.
- Ability to problem solve and make good decisions.
- Ability to interpret data, be detail oriented, accurate, analytical, and organized.
- Openness and readiness to be trained in areas that can benefit HVC clientele.
- Able to communicate clearly, effectively, and compassionately with others.
- Ability to work well as a team member, and also as an individual.
- US Armed Forces Veteran or experience working with Veterans.
- Experience with administering prescription medications and drug/alcohol usage testing.
- Peer support certification.
- Valid California driver’s license, acceptable proof of automobile insurance, and/or reliable mode of transportation.
- Knowledge and experience navigating and logging data into a Database or Homeless Management Information System (HMIS).
- Minimum 1 year working with homeless and/or veteran population.
