About Us:

Volunteers of America of Greater Los Angeles is a large, national not-for-profit organization founded in 1896. We provide a variety of social services to Los Angeles area communities such as Head Start programs, Upward Bound college prep programs, veterans’ services, homeless shelters, low-income housing program as well as drug and alcohol rehabilitation. The Upward Bound Program identifies and assists individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education. The program provides academic, career and financial advising to students; encourages them to graduate from high school and continue their post-secondary education. The program operates an academic and summer component. Provides after school enrichment program, college and career tours.

Saturday Academy is designed to provide students with college and career knowledge, SAT Preparation and the review of core subject foundations (Math, Science and English).  During the core course instruction students learn new topics or they review what they have already learned however the students will have the opportunity to learn new strategies and/or techniques.    

8:00am - 3:00pm every other Saturday

Pay Rate: $26.00 hourly

Responsibilities:

This position:

  • Develop and plan a course curriculum in accordance with California Content Standards
  • Prepare and submit: subject syllabus, weekly lesson plans, & weekly participant evaluation reports
  • Administer assessment test to participants
  • Maintain attendance record and grades
  • Communicate with the Project Director and Educational Advisor participants’ progress as it relates to comprehension of course material
  • Provide sufficient volume of homework/class work to reinforce skill acquisition of participants
  • Provide on-going evaluations of participants to determine their academic progress
  • Meet with Project Director and/or Educational Advisor weekly to discuss participant progress and concerns
  • Enforce all rules and regulations with each participant equally
  • Maintain an orderly classroom
  • Provide an assessment of participant’s academic strengths, progress and recommendations for further improvement
  • Document all contacts, services, and activities
  • Provide Project Director with a letter grade and brief written evaluation of participants’ academic strengths and weaknesses every Semester
  • Attend Upward Bound events and activities
  • Additional duties may be assigned

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in area of expertise
  • Must have a current California credential
  • Must have at least 2 years of experience Teaching
  • Must be familiar working with Low-Income and First Generation College Students
  • Must be able to work with students who are in different levels but are in the same class
  • Must be patient and comfortable working with high school students and must be willing to enforce rules
