Lead Payee Specialist (SPA 3 and 6 West Covina and Compton)

The Lead Payee Specialist provides support and guidance to the Payee Specialists. Additionally, provides payee services to mentally/physically disabled clients by assisting them with the budgeting of their Supplemental Social Security and/or Social Security income or other benefits they are receiving while supporting the payee specialists with their case load and clients.

Responsibilities:

  • Support and guide payee specialists with their caseloads and clients; provides training and problem solving guidance to Payee Specialists
  • Provide payee support services to the mentally ill, homeless or near homeless, physically disabled and aging populations to assist them with the budgeting of their Supplemental Social Security and/or Social Security income, and other benefits one may be entitled to as their Representative Payee as recognized by the Social Security Administration
  • Use benefits received for client to meet current needs with food, clothing and shelter
  • Ensure clients bills are paid on time
  • Provide proper accounting to Social Security for the use of client’s benefit funding
  • Responsible for the intake, processing and explaining of the Payee Services Program to the respective client
  • Process and mail all checks that need to be written for that particular day to ensure clients’ bills are paid in a timely manner
  • Responsible for completing and filing all necessary paperwork from the Social Security Administration, including yearly Representative Payee Reports
  • Maintain accurate client notes and complete monthly budgets for each client to show how income will be distributed
  • Assist accountants with accounting duties as requested
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Background and Skills:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and present data contained in those records in a timely manner
  • Competent user of all MS Office Suite applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Must be willing to travel between Compton and West Covina Offices
  • Must have demonstrated experience leading/managing staff

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in social services, business or public relations field or equivalent combination of education and work experience

Experience:

  • Must have minimum of two years’ experience working with homeless and mentally ill populations
  • Must have minimum of one year experience handling budgets, finances and sensitive information
  • Demonstrated experience working with vulnerable populations
  • Experience multi-tasking and meeting multiple deadlines at once

Special Skills Required to Perform this Position:

  • Ability to relate effectively with people
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to exercise patience, understanding, creativity, and flexibility
  • Valid California driver’s license and dependable transportation with adequate insurance
  • Ability to perform under circumstances of possible emotional stress and conflict, dealing with un-cooperative clients.
  • Ability to work a regular schedule provided by your direct supervisor.

Preferred Skills for this Position:

  • Accounting software experience, preferably Quick Books Pro
  • Knowledge of communities where Payee Services are provided
  • Experience as a Payee Specialist
