The Lead Benefits Specialist provides payee services in San Gabriel Valley, SPA 3, to various populations in order to assist them with the budgeting of their Supplemental Social Security and/or Social Security income. They will also be responsible for building relationships with outside organizations and agencies to foster the development of the program along with reviewing work for accuracy and completeness. Qualified candidates will have excellent written and oral communication skills, experience providing direct services to individuals experiencing homelessness, and have a working knowledge of the resources in the area. Benefits Specialists will need to be comfortable and adaptable in using different platforms to capture and store client records or data, and managing finances.


  • Assisting the Program Manager with daily oversight of program operations
  • Providing on-the-job training, mentor new and established employees and reinforce case management strategies within the agency
  • Resolve client and case manager problems encountered during daily operations and determine appropriate solutions
  • Responsible for doing outreach in order to build relationships with outside organizations and obtain clients for the program
  • Responsible for maintaining a caseload of 40 beneficiaries. Duties include program enrollment, monthly follow-ups, creating individual service plans for ongoing money management assistance and submitting financial request forms
  • Overseeing one case manager with a caseload of 80 beneficiaries. Duties include reviewing work for accuracy and completeness, return assignments with recommendations for proper completion, and provide assistance with managing workload


Bachelor's Degree in social work, social services, public administration, public health or related field


  • At least one year of experience in benefits advocacy (2 years without degree); healthcare/benefits administration a plus
  • At least one year of case management experience connecting clients to resources; (2 years without degree)
  • Minimum of one year of experience providing benefits to homeless individuals
  • Experience submitting claims for Social Security, CAPI and VA Benefits

Special Skills Required to Perform this Position:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Effective written and oral communications skills
  • Valid California driver's license and dependable transportation with adequate insurance
  • Understanding and demonstrated ability to navigate government programs preferred
  • Strong Case Management skills and knowledge of available resources in the area

Preferred Skills for this Position:

  • Familiar with HMIS data system
  • Understanding and demonstrated ability to navigate governmental benefit programs preferred
  • Demonstrated experience providing services to participants from diverse backgrounds (ethnic/racial diversity, LGBTQ community and varying socioeconomic histories)
