Housing Specialist - (HUD-VASH)

HUD–VASH Program Provides long–term case management, clinical/supportive services, and permanent housing assistance for chronically homeless Veterans. Combines Housing Choice Voucher assistance for homeless Veterans with case management and clinical services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs. 

Responsibilities:

The HUD-VASH Housing Specialist duties are summarized as:

  • Will work in collaboration with clinical treatment teams and will facilitate positive working relationships with county, city, and state governmental agencies, community & VA providers, advocacy groups and the affordable housing community 
  • Will provide limited recovery-focused case management duties related to housing stabilization and will work as an inter-disciplinary team member
  • Assist veterans with the housing search and process of moving in 
  • Transport veterans to view housing options
  • Conduct community outreach and education to engage property owners about HUD-VASH program
  • Assist with PHA and landlord paperwork(lease)
  • Provides referrals and crisis intervention as needed
  • Counsels veterans applicants on fair housing and lease agreements and housing eligibility. Assist veterans and landlords as the leasing process proceeds
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience
  • 1 - 3 years experience working with veterans, people in recovery and or homelessness individuals
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Valid California driver's license, insurance and reliable transportation
  • Ability to develop relationships with landlords & families as well as a wide variety of service stakeholders (schools, health and public benefit agencies)
  • Must be proficient in record keeping tracking, maintaining, and reporting statistics according to program guidelines and requirements
  • Must have the ability to meet the physical requirements of this position

Additional Requirements:

  • U.S. Veteran strongly preferred
  • Bilingual (Spanish) strongly preferred
  • Database experience (HMIS) strongly preferred
  • Able to lift up to 25 pounds
