THIS IS A TEMPORARY PART TIME POSITION
JOB SUMMARY AND PURPOSE
The Temporary Shelter Health Caretaker provides basic care for program participants in need of minimal care, and social distance from others during the current health crisis. The Temporary Shelter Health Caretaker will provide food, hydration, and basic assistance while monitoring social distancing and health condition of participants.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide assistance, interacting in a positive manner, utilizing techniques suggested by the primary caregiver and approved by Program Staff.
- Provide meals and hydration
- Assist in daily self-care activities
- Monitor social distancing effort, condition of client
- Contact Program staff immediately if a difficult situation arises –including health or behavioral problems
- Be knowledgeable of local emergency responders, be ready and able to seek immediate emergency support (Fire, Ambulance, Police).
- Communicate frequently with staff/Primary Caregiver regarding needs of participants; report status of participants to Program Staff on regular basis, updating with any change in needs.
- Must be able to pass a fingerprint clearance, background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment and education verifications
- Valid California driver’s license, acceptable proof of automobile insurance, and/or reliable mode of transportation
- High School diploma or GED
- Three to six months providing caretaker or caregiver as a worker or volunteer, or a combination of both totaling six months experience; a formal degree or certification in a care-giving s discipline can substitute for the experience requirement.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Able to follow verbal and written instruction regarding care of individuals
- Able to perform basic assistance to minor illness
- Able to maintain pleasant demeanor with participants
- Demonstrate concern and respect for participants
- Be alert and ensure safety of staff and participants
- Ability to perform under circumstances of possible emotional stress and conflict, including dealing with un-cooperative clients
- Ability to effectively communicate with homeless population and program staff while demonstrating a high degree of diplomacy and tact
- Must be able to work flexible schedule (evenings and weekends required)
- Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, with or without reasonable accommodation, including meeting qualitative and quantitative productivity standards.
- Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.
- Compassionate, caring individual capable of providing one-on-one daily care, including in times of stress; comfortable with addressing and correcting inappropriate behavior; able to de-escalate conflict
- Must be able to work effectively with people from all walks of life with compassion
- Hold a California Driver’s license, with required insurance and a reliable vehicle
- Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
