Upward Bound

Serving students at Roosevelt High, Dorsey High, Crenshaw High, Washington Preparatory, Leuzinger, North Hollywood High, San Fernando High, Polytechnic High, Sun Valley and Westminster High. Upward Bound provides fundamental support and preparation for college. Serving more than 500 students annually from low-income families and/or high school students from families in which neither parent holds a college degree.

Upward Bound is one of seven federally-funded TRiO programs.  The Upward Bound program was established to provided fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance.  The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits.   Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree.   The goal is to increase the rate at which participants complete the secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of post-secondary education. We provide after-school academic instruction in core subjects and foreign languages, as well as PSAT, SAT, and ACT test preparation. Career exploration and mentoring are also an integral component to assist participants in deciding on potential college majors and career options.

We also provide college and career planning workshops, a summer program, individualized academic planning and counseling, financial aid advising, scholarship and application assistance, supplemental Saturday instruction and weekly tutoring as well as college and cultural field trips and an alumni program.

JOB SUMMARY AND PURPOSE

The Instructor is responsible to instruct and provide supplemental academic assistance to the Upward Bound students.   The purpose is for the student to better understand the academic material and provide assistance to all students in the target site.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and plan a course curriculum in accordance with California Content Standards
  • Prepare and submit: subject syllabus, weekly lesson plans, & weekly participant evaluation reports
  • Administer assessment test to participants
  • Maintain attendance record and grades
  • Communicate with the Project Director and Educational Advisor participants’ progress as it relates to comprehension of course material
  • Provide sufficient volume of homework/class work to reinforce skill acquisition of participants
  • Provide on-going evaluations of participants to determine their academic progress
  • Meet with Project Director and/or Educational Advisor weekly to discuss participant progress and concerns
  • Enforce all rules and regulations with each participant equally
  • Maintain an orderly classroom
  • Provide an assessment of participants academic strengths, progress and recommendations for further improvement
  • Document all contacts, services, and activities
  • Provide Project Director with a letter grade and brief written evaluation of participants’ academic strengths and weaknesses quarterly
  • Attend Upward Bound events and activities
  • Other duties as required and is subject to change at any time

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to pass a fingerprint clearance, background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment and education verifications
  • Reliable mode of transportation to visit target school, training sites, as well as other Volunteers of America sites

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree required in education, social work, counseling, and/or related degree from accredited college or university

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience working in an educational setting, TRIO Federal program, or similar program with disadvantaged and at-risk students
  • Experience preparing high school students for admission to post-secondary schools

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Intermediate to advance knowledge in target subject and have mastery of concepts that pertain to required subject

TECHNOLOGY SKILLS:

  • Familiarity and knowledge with Microsoft operating system navigation, outlook, word, excel, power-point, internet browser, etc.
  • Use of technology for teaching and/or in academic setting
  • Use of technology as a resource to keep students engaged

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community
  • Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors
  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations
  • Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including relationship building
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to address the various learning styles and skill levels to students

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current California Secondary Teaching credential or passing score for the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST)
  • Knowledge and ability to utilize multimedia equipment and technology
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish (written and verbal)
  • Teaching experience with disadvantaged students
  • Strong interest and motivation to increase students' interest in target subject
