Volunteers of America of Greater Los Angeles is a large, national not-for-profit organization founded in 1896.  We provide a variety of social services to Los Angeles area communities such as Head Start programs, Upward Bound college prep programs, veterans’ services, homeless shelters, low-income housing program as well as drug and alcohol rehabilitation.  Learn more at

The  STEP II Program is a 90-120 day intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment program targeting predominantly  chronically homeless Veterans and some non-veterans in Los Angeles County.  Our program provides trauma informed care, case management and linkages to VA and other public benefit programs.  We also service Court appointed/mandated clients from Los Angeles County Probation and Parole. We provide Certification of Completion, proof of enrollment, monthly Court reports and random drug testing.

Temporary Position


  • Performs primary alcohol and drug counseling screening: assessment and intake; bio psychosocial assessments; client and family orientation; and development of treatment plans in collaboration with Case manager and Clinical Counselor
  • Conduct crisis intervention; group, individual, and educational sessions; discharge and transitions planning
  • Supports culturally sensitive, gender responsive and trauma informed milieu
  • Work with participants through case management to help achieve individual goals
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Associates of Arts degree in Behavioral Science or related field preferred
  • Alcohol and Drug Counseling certification by an approved accrediting organization
  • Experience providing SUD treatment services working with the target population
  • Demonstrate excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft office
  • Excellent oral, written, organizational, and motivational skills
  • Must be available and flexible with scheduling

Additional Requirements:

  • Culturally sensitive and competent with bilingual skills (Spanish) preferred
  • Valid California driver's license, insurance and reliable transportation  
  • Successful completion of tuberculosis screening, CPR training, and background screening
  • Strong crisis management, conflict resolution and deescalation skills
