Case Manager - Clinical (The Barracks Harm Reduction)

The Barracks A “Housing First” program, providing transitional housing to single Veterans who suffer from substance abuse, mental disorders, and chronic homelessness. Refer clients to the VA where they receive mental health counseling and access to various benefits. The goal of The Barracks is to establish for clients permanent housing, and to help them attain any benefits they may qualify for through the VA and other organizations. Must have an Honorable Discharge to qualify. Case management, transitional housing, food, life skills counseling. Location: Downtown Los Angeles (Skid Row)

Responsibilities:

 Under supervision of licensed Program Manager, the Clinical Case Manager:

  • Provides psychosocial treatment to a wide variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, educational, and other diverse backgrounds
  • Formulates and implements treatment plans identifying individual's goals, strengths, coping skills, and assistance needed
  • Basic knowledge of psychosocial treatment modalities, and ability to implement treatment modalities in working with individuals, families, and groups to achieve treatment goals
  • Ability to utilize behavior therapy through harm reduction in maximizing gains through positive reinforcement and applying aversive consequences in non-punishing manner with unwanted behavior and using the therapeutic relationship as the major reinforcement to behavioral change
  • Knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses, disability, and treatment procedures. This includes acute, chronic, and traumatic illnesses/injuries; common medications and their effects/side effects; and medical terminology
  • Basic skill in the use of computer software applications for drafting documents, data management, and tracking. Ability to learn and utilize software program in use by VHA

Requirements:

  • Must have a master's degree in social work (MSW) from a school fully accredited by the governing body
  • At least 2 years of experience in mental health/substance use disorder treatment and/or working with homelessness
  • Effective written and oral communications skills with people from varied backgrounds
  • Proven working knowledge of Microsoft Office; ability to learn and use program-specific software
  • Valid California drivers license and access to dependable transportation with adequate insurance

Additional Requirements:

  • Coursework in substance use disorder counseling a plus
  • U.S. Armed Forces Veteran or experience working with Veterans preferred
  • At least 1 year in residential treatment setting preferred
  • Basic knowledge of psychosocial treatment modalities, especially cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy skills training (DBT), motivational interviewing (MI), relapse prevention (RP), Seeking Safety preferred
  • If recovering substance user, must have at least 3 years of sobriety
