Career Specialist (Juvenile Probation)

Volunteers of America of Greater Los Angeles is a large, national not-for-profit organization founded in 1896. We provide a variety of social services to Los Angeles area communities such as Head Start programs, Upward Bound college prep programs, veterans’ services, homeless shelters, low-income housing program as well as drug and alcohol rehabilitation. The Career Specialist will report directly to the Educational Enhancement Program Manager to ensure participant progress towards project benchmarks. The Career Specialist works as a guide, assisting youth with involvement in the juvenile justice system towards a path to community college, vocational training and/or a specified career pathway.

Responsibilities:

  • Research and develop career and college-related resources for youth participants
  • Works individually with youth to develop career plans
  • Works in conjunction with program staff, especially instructor to ensure program success
  • Develops presentation materials for classroom
  • Work in individualized and small group settings with students
  • Develop individualized career plans for students
  • Develop presentations and materials that inform students of regional academic and vocational programming
  • Present workshops on job readiness skills including resume preparation, interview etiquette, and professional demeanor
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree in social work or a related field
  • At least 2 years of relevant work experience providing vocational or career training especially for youth
  • Effective written and oral communications skills with people from varied backgrounds
  • Proven working knowledge of Microsoft Office; ability to learn and use program-specific software
  • Valid California driver’s license and access to dependable transportation with adequate insurance
  • Must be able to pass a LA County Probation background check
  • Bilingual (preferred)
