SAMHSA FAMILY TREE

SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) Youth and Family Tree Program, a comprehensive and multisystem family approach to provide assessments, evidence-based SUD/COD education, early intervention and treatment, peer recovery support, and coordination of case management and wraparound supportive services to youth, transitional aged youth and their families/primary caregivers, with a SUD or COD who reside in LA County CA.

VOALA will serve adolescents (ages 12-18), transitional-aged youth (16-25) and their families/caregivers with a SUD or COD who reside in LA County CA with a focus on SPAs 3 and 6. The project will target minority and underserved populations as the service area has a high rate of poverty, socioeconomic, economic and healthcare disparities.

Using a comprehensive and multisystem service approach, VOALA will utilize the EBPs of Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and SBIRT while incorporating Motivational Interviewing and trauma-informed care. While providing SUD and COD treatment to youth as well as SBIRT for participating families, the project will also integrate peer supports, tobacco counseling, mental health and primary health care, youth and family recovery and wraparound services, case/care management and benefits advocacy to promote increased access to care, service use and improved outcomes.

JOB SUMMARY AND PURPOSE

The AOD Counselor I will provide an adequate array of evidence-based substance use disorders/co-occurring disorders treatment services which may include but are not limited to: individual and group therapy, gender/LGBTQ-responsive and trauma-informed care (e.g. Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, SBIRT), and tobacco counseling.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs primary substance use disorder counseling functions for clients including screening, assessment, and intake
    • Collaborate with case manager and LPHA
    • Crisis intervention; group, individual, and educational sessions
    • Discharge and transition planning
    • Discharge summary and coordination of treatment services with members of the multidisciplinary team
  • Work with the Project Director and partnering agencies to develop and implement the Individual Service Plan/Family Service Plan and Aftercare Plan, which will determine age-appropriate goals, and implement evidence-based substance use disorders/co-occurring disorders education, early intervention and treatment services
  • Provide an adequate array of evidence-based substance use disorders/co-occurring disorders treatment services which may include but are not limited to: individual and group therapy, gender/LGBT-responsive and trauma-informed care (e.g. Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, SBIRT), and tobacco counseling
  • Conduct screening and SBIRT with participating family members/caregivers as appropriate, including parents, spouses and children of the participant
  • Ensure the project coordinates with other agency-based services and community-based agencies as applicable and appropriate such as health care services, mental health care and co-occurring treatment, housing assistance, employment/supported employment, victim services, and other programs to support the successful recovery of program participants
  • Timely and accurate entry of electronic health records that reflects treatment and progress of clients in the program.  Documentation may include web-based, electronic and/or paper documents
  • Keep abreast and attend training of new trends and advancements in the area of behavioral health and serving youth, young adults and families
  • Other duties as required and is subject to change at any time

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to pass a fingerprint clearance, background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment and education verifications

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree in behavioral science or related field; or equivalent combination of education and work experience (4 years total)
  • Alcohol and Drug Counseling Certificate by an approved accrediting organization (CCAPP, CADTP or CADEE)

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with youth, young adults and families who have experience substance abuse and/or mental health diagnosis

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of community resources and service agencies
  • Knowledge of overall objectives and evidence-based service concepts
  • Knowledge of rules, regulations, and laws pertaining to the care of addicted, mentally ill, and/or co-occurring individuals

TECHNOLOGY SKILLS:

  • Basic Microsoft operating system navigation, including Outlook, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Familiar with Database use/entry including HMIS

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • The ability to work autonomously while utilizing the supervision of the Project Director;
  • Ability to relate with a wide variety of professionals and clientele
  • Demonstrated ability to perform under circumstances of possible emotional stress and conflict including dealing with un-cooperative clients
  • Strong Communication Skills in oral and written English language
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, with or without reasonable accommodation, including meeting qualitative and quantitative productivity standards
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards

INTERPERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Client- focused, with leadership qualities: Dependable, collaborative, prompt, positive mindset, flexible organized, and comfortable with conflict resolution/mediation

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated ability with EHR
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish (written and verbal)
  • Strong crisis management skills
  • Conflict resolution & de-escalation skills
