Content Marketing Specialist (Technical)
Marketing | Kitchener, Ontario, Canada | Full Time
In the coming year, well-crafted technical content will be a big part of our growth as a business.
The majority of our best prospective customers come from people Googling their problem and finding what we’ve written about it. Our upcoming product line is catering to new markets that need to be introduced to our products and expertise. We need your help to educate product developers around the world that the nature of electronics design is changing and that Voltera’s tools will make sure they don’t get left behind.
We make tools for the electronics manufacturing industry.
Specifically, we shrink entire circuit board factories into a machine the size of a laptop and therefore cut prototyping time from weeks to an hour. Our machines are used by thousands of hardware developers in over 60 countries to create devices that save lives, explore space, and teach the engineers of the future.
We will soon be releasing a product that will change how product developers around the world design electronics. We will introduce them to devices that are flexible/stretchable/biocompatible/etc., educate them on the benefits of evolving how they design, and give them the knowledge and peace of mind to do so.
We are consistently among the top growing companies in Canada, have been TechCrunch Disrupt Champions and one of the most innovative Kickstarter campaigns of all time. If you’d like to find out more about Voltera’s history, products, and personality, check out our site and YouTube channel.
About the job
Having designed one of the only direct-write electronics printers on the planet, our company has tons of knowledge but not enough time to share it. With your help we can turn curious engineers into savvy customers and then empower those customers with the knowledge they need to push our tools to the limit.
We’d like to release a steady cadence of information about our products, underlying technologies, and industry trends. This content will be in the form of articles on our website, whitepapers, guest posts, support documentation, and content for email marketing or advertising.
Planning - You will contribute to content planning by proactively running keyword analyses to identify content gaps. You will need to stay on top of SEO trends and strategies within content marketing and on-page SEO and teach the rest of the team as you learn.
Research - Each article will begin with primary research: interviewing other Volterans about the upcoming topics, watching videos and webinars, and maybe even reading research papers or calling customers (examples).
Writing - We’re not just looking for a writer, we’re looking for a teacher. Someone who knows the value of teaching through metaphor, who can put themselves in the shoes of someone who doesn’t understand the material and leave them feeling accomplished and empowered by the end. You will need to match our personality and style (“have something worth saying” and “write like you talk”).
Collaborating - Video is a huge part of our content marketing strategy, so you’ll need to work closely with our amazing video producer on the many projects we’d like presented in both mediums. The ability to concisely explain difficult concepts on camera (while drafting scripts that do the same) would be an asset. If you have Photoshop or Illustrator skills, you’ll be putting them to work to create diagrams or images to accompany the written content.
Editing - Editing goes two ways at Voltera - you will be reviewing work written by others and coaching them on ways to improve their writing and communication skills. Technical staff will be reviewing your content for accuracy. Ultimately it is up to you to strike balance between accommodating feedback and getting things done, but someone who can edit – and be edited – is a must.
Measuring - You will be expected to measure the effectiveness of our written content and have meaningful conversations about improving it.
At the end of the day, we’re a start-up. There will be plenty of other work thrown your way on top of whatever projects you bring to the table yourself. After 6 months at Voltera you would be expected to update our brand guideline and internal documentation so that we’re aligned on how we communicate as a business.
You might not have a background in electronics or manufacturing. That’s totally fine. One of the many amazing things about our team is how much they love teaching so as long as you’re hungry to learn and not intimidated by materials science or hardware development, you’re going to thrive.
We are looking for someone with technical marketing skills – experience with CMSs, proficiency with HTML and CSS, and a solid understanding of web analytics and SEO concepts.
While we don’t have requirements for a degree/diploma or a number of years of experience, we aim to be a B2B company with the personality of a B2C brand so if you’ve done that before, amazing! As long as you bring the right personality and attitude, and can demonstrate relevant experience to our goals, we’ll adjust the role and compensation to you.
Seeing as we manufacture all our products ourselves, we’re never going to be a fully remote company. But the pandemic lockdowns are forcing us to build some flexibility into how we work. That being said, if you live in or near the Kitchener-Waterloo region, that would be best.
Finally, you need to be self-sufficient. While we expect you to put your hand up to say you need help, you will need to take ownership, move fast, and find ways around obstacles.
How to Apply
Please submit your application on our careers page. Make sure to share why the future of Voltera looks bright because you’d be a part of it, what attracts you to Voltera in the first place, and how you know you can make technical content seem approachable. We’re looking for someone concise and with personality.
We look forward to hearing from you! ✌️
