Lead Product Designer

Engineering | REMOTE | Full Time

Job Description

We believe that everyone has the right to private and secure communication. Although encryption tools have existed for some time and are freely available, poor user experience makes them a non-option for most people. Therefore, to act on our belief, a great user experience (UX) is at the forefront of Virtru’s mission. This is where you come in.

Your job at Virtru is to empower people to communicate through easy-to-use encryption.

We might be a good match if...

You’re a generalist with a sweet spot.

While there is one thing you are particularly good at, you can jump in anywhere in the UX stack and enjoy the variety and challenges of small teams focused on shipping.

You value craftsmanship.

You obsess over detail and polish. You have a depth of knowledge in various interaction paradigms along with thoughts on how to improve them. You're an experience whisperer, and you can distill complicated problems into simple and elegant solutions.

You’ve shipped product.

You’ve weathered release cycles and know what details matter at each stage, how to motivate engineers to get the fit and finish right, how to obtain and translate insights from user studies into meaningful action, and what’s most likely to go afoul at each stage. You understand how to get alignment on solutions you feel passionate about. You can share several shining examples of real work you've shipped, and what you learned along the way.

You think beyond the ‘how’ and help to define the ‘what.’

You lead the product design process for your team — from problem definition to technical execution. You thrive best when helping to define the requirements, not just translating them into designs. You draw out and welcome ideas from anyone on your team, including (but not limited to) engineering, marketing, sales, and support folks.

You can think and talk about the bottom line.

Looking through pages of metrics and analytics don’t scare you and you know which features can act as force multipliers on your company’s business model.

You thrive in user validation

You know when and how to get effective user validation through prototypes (low or high fidelity), user testing, user research, or diving into metrics.

You are a cross-platform zen master.

You live somewhere between screen sizes and operating systems. You know what translates between them, how to translate, and why one solution works better for A but not B.

You think in systems

You know that one component, color, typographic element doesn’t just exist in one place. It must work in different contexts and different screens. You not only deal with solutions for the here and now, but think about how that might affect the larger whole and future issues.

In addition, you would also...

  • Help to define the user model and user interface for new and existing Virtru products and features.

  • Develop high level and/or detailed storyboards, mockups, and prototypes to effectively communicate interaction and design ideas.

  • Gauge and validate the usability of new and existing products and making constructive suggestions for change.

  • Contribute to, improve, and implement an evolving design process and design system that incorporates accessibility.

  • Collaborate cross functionally with product and engineering counterparts to ensure projects are well-defined, high-impact, and possible to successfully execute on.

  • Lead the UX team in defining, executing, and evangelizing a great user experience

  • Create and conduct experiments, user interviews, user tests

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • Located in or around Washington, DC

  • 7+ years of experience in an iterative product environment

  • Strong experience user-centered centered processes, including user research, persona creation, user testing

  • Experience leading Design Studios, Design Sprints, team brainstorming and ideation exercises.

  • Experience working with cross-functional teams to drive strategy, vision, and execution

  • Experience with prototyping as a means to explore and convey design solutions.

  • Thinking in terms of design systems and making rational design decisions.

  • Proficient with industry standard design tools (e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketch).

  • A demonstrable refined eye for Typography, Interaction and Visual Design, and Ideation.

  • An understanding of what makes an experience good or bad is critical. You can think through user problems, find reasonable solutions, mock them up in detail, test your assumptions, iterate, and work with engineers to build them.

  • Can communicate clearly and effectively to a variety of audiences from engineers to business executives

  • Self-motivated, able to prioritize and manage workload and meet critical project deadlines

Preferred qualifications:

  • Team lead/project experience

  • You have a drive and hunger to grow, improve, and learn new skills

  • Experience with HTML, CSS, Sass, React, JavaScript, Android Studio, XCode, etc.

  • In addition to visual design, you have an understanding of motion/animation

  • Extensive experience partnering with Product Managers to develop the strategy and rationale for features.

  • You understand the technical limitations and liberties behind your decisions and have enough chops to communicate your ideas to our engineers and beyond.
