The Senior Accountant will contribute to a growing financial team to support VelosBio’s accounting operations. This newly created position will be responsible for accurate journal entries and reconciliations as well as support the internal controls process. A team player with strong collaboration and communication skills are essential for success in this role.
Responsibilities and Duties
Preparation of journal entries (accruals, prepaid and expense transfers), account reconciliations and verifying accuracy of the general ledger
Perform portions of the Accounts Payable cycle, such as new vendor set up
Work closely with the Accounts Payable team to resolve issues and ensure accuracy of payments including scanning invoices at receipt, invoice coding and monitoring status of payment status
Prepare purchase orders for department managers and review agreement documents (MSA, SOW, proposal)
Responsible for maintaining financial records in accordance with established procedures
Perform month-end and quarter-end accounting close procedures
Investigate and resolve discrepancies
Contribute to the financial audit process, collaborating and communicating with internal team and external auditors as needed
Complete special projects as assigned across functional areas within the Finance group
Participate in process transformation and efficiencies to include identifying areas for streamlining and improvements
Participate in implementation and testing of new ERP software
Qualifications and Skills:
4+ years of relevant accounting experience plus at least 2+ years in the biotech industry at a fast-growing organization
Bachelor’s degree (or advanced degree) in Finance, Accounting or equivalent
Results-oriented, organized, efficient and resourceful team player that excels in a dynamic, collaborative environment
Experience of monthly close activities in a deadline driven environment
Systems thinker with demonstrated process improvement skills and knowledge of accounting best practices and standards
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (written, oral, presentation); communicates in a clear, concise and organized manner; active listener and listens to others to obtain information
Has a sense of urgency, demonstrates the ability to manage time and prioritize activities & resources to ensure department standards are met on a consistent basis
Team player and understands the importance of being part of a team
Advanced level computer skills, including hands-on experience with a mid-tier accounting software package
Strong working knowledge of the Microsoft suite of products and highly proficient with Excel
Experience in a large pharmaceutical or biotech organization a plus
A strong desire to learn and progress
