Position Description:

The Engine/Powertrain Control Engineer will be responsible for developing advanced control strategies to meet challenging performance targets for performance, fuel economy, emissions, and driveability through application of modern control design techniques along with careful calibration and validation of strategies.

  • Design, implement and prove estimators and advanced engine and powertrain control strategies to meet stringent targets for fuel economy, emissions, driveability, and NVH
  • Carefully plan, and analyze results from, experiments and simulations identifying key dynamic characteristics of engines and powertrains
  • Develop and validate control-oriented models for use in estimators and control strategies
  • Closely collaborate with Test, Calibration and Analysis teams
  • Contribute to generation of innovative ideas and develop project plans


  • M.S. in control systems engineering (ME, EE or Aero)
  • 5 or more years’ experience with advanced gasoline engine control is required  
  • Knowledge of algorithms related to transient airflow and fuel flow estimation in gasoline engines
  • Strong analysis and modeling orientation, using MATLAB/Simulink/Stateflow
  • Knowledge of gasoline powertrain control strategies to satisfy passenger car OEM-level fuel economy, emissions, driveability and NVH targets and constraints
  • Experience with rapid prototyping environments such as dSPACE or ETAS
  • Systematic approach toward engineering development
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills including the ability to influence technical direction
  • Demonstrated team orientation and project management skills
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced start-up environment

  • Knowledge of instrumentation/data acquisition and experiment design
  • Experience with valve/cylinder de-activation engines
