Deaf and Nontraditional Communication Professional (761413)

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Speech and Language Pathology, Behavior Analysis, or another related field
  • At least 5 years of professional experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities
  • At least 5 years of professional experience working with individuals who communicate through sign language, tactile sign language, visual gestural communication, augmentative and alternative communication, and/or other communication methods
  • At least 2 years of professional experience working with behavior assessments and behavior support plans
  • Efficient skills in Microsoft Office
  • Strong communication skills and organizational skills, ability to multitask effectively.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language preferred
  • Any relevant combination of education and experience to fulfill job requirements

Role Description:

The employee in this position works closely with the Deaf Services Coordinator to ensure that Deaf participants in home and community-based service programs receive accommodations and supports to maximize receptive and expressive communication. Employee will also perform professional and clinical work to support individuals with communication needs across the lifespan. The contractor will collaborate with other Pennsylvania offices such as PaTTAN, , the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation’s Office, or Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing to identify and expand availability of interpreter and assistive technology services.
The contractor works in conjunction with Administrative Entities and Supports Coordination Organizations to expand the availability of providers who are wiling and qualified to support individuals who are Deaf and/or have nontraditional communication needs.
The contractor may also develop training materials to increase knowledge and awareness of the unique needs of people who are Deaf and/or have nontraditional communication needs.

Duties:

  • Assists in the assessment of capacity and statewide needs in the areas of supporting people with communication needs.
  • Develops strategies to improve the organization, financing, and delivery of services to people with communication needs.
  • Develops and presents training materials, including online modules and e-learning trainings relating to communication needs specific to providers, Administrative Entities, Supports Coordination Organizations, and others.
  • Collaborates with Administrative Entities and Supports Coordination Organizations to develop communication specialists and other providers to support participants with communication needs in home and community-based settings.
  • Works to recruit and expand the availability of providers who are willing and qualified to support individuals with communication needs.
  • Works with others to develop and expand resources.
  • Monitors to ensure that recommended communication supports are offered to individuals, that individuals were given the opportunity to make informed choices about communication supports, and to ensure that selected services and supports are provided expeditiously.
  • Responds to complaints relating to communication needs.
  • Works collaboratively with individuals, providers, Administrative Entities, and Supports Coordination Organizations to identify and create environments conducive to effective communication in a manner that promotes individual choice.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
