Research Intern, Software Architecture of Connected Car Systems

Job Summary:

Communication between cars, edge, and cloud computing is going to have a great impact on the next generation architecture of car systems that opens a new era of mobility. In other words, connected cars are emerging as a new foundation of evolution in the automotive industry.

This internship position, Research Intern, Software Architecture of Connected Car Systems, involves a wide-variety of research perspectives, e.g., Plug & Play flexible software platform study, Digital Twin system architecture, cyber-security analytics, and system assurance & certification. Toyota InfoTechnology Center, Systems and Software Research Division is looking for highly self motivated Ph.D. students in Computer Science or related field as interns for these research topics.


The objective of this internship is to provide interns with opportunities to:

  • Study on Software Architecture of Connected Car Systems focusing on one primary research topic from the list below;

    • Multi-layer architecture design for Cloud-vehicle interconnect;
    • Architecture of Digital Twin system & service for connected cars;
    • Security specification languages and cross-layer security analysis;
    • System assurance for security and/or over-the-air update;
  • Develop research prototypes;

  • Collaborate with a researcher on the writing of research papers.


  • Currently pursuing a PhD program in electrical engineering, computer science, or mechanical engineering.

Required Skills:

  • Familiarity with formalization of systems, software architecture, and cyber-security.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as within a highly motivated team environment.

  • Excellent communication skills and a proven ability to deliver on challenging software development tasks.

  • Ability to engage in general research activities as a result of ability to define problems and issues to be addressed, finding and using research data, and being able to make recommendations and findings in writing and in presentations.

  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, including ability to respond professionally in all types of situations.

Administrative Details:

  • Part-time (up to 6 months) or full-time (up to 3 months) internship starting in the fall at Toyota ITC's Mountain View, CA office.

  • Applicants *must* already have the ability/authorization to work in the USA (Toyota ITC will NOT provide VISA support).
