Job Description

PURPOSE OF JOB: The Controller manages the accounting staff and is responsible for the direct oversight of day-to-day accounting operations as well as aspects of the company’s annual operating plan, including the budget and certain financial analyses.  The Controller also oversees inventory, other assets and regulatory compliance.  In addition, the Controller may be tasked with goals associated with key company objectives, including those linked to improving cash flows, cost structures and return on investment.  The Controller position reports to the Finance Director and is based at the Redwood Road winery in Napa.

The position’s responsibilities require the maintenance and oversight of financial policies, procedures, controls, budgets, and reporting systems as well as consistent, timely and accurate reporting.  The position also requires daily interaction with various employees, including senior management, as well as with bankers, outside auditors, insurers, etc.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following, though other duties may be assigned:

  • Accounting department operations
    • Effectively manage all aspects of day-to-day accounting systems and processes, including Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, General Ledger, payroll, treasury, inventory, capital expense, and fixed asset accounting
    • Maintain accounting records in accordance with GAAP standards
    • Manage a timely and accurate monthly financial close process, including:
      • Establishing a recurring financial close calendar
      • Creation, review and approval of journal entries and account reconciliations
      • Assigning close-related tasks and responsibilities to level work load
      • Generate, review and distribute key financial reporting
    • Understand and review all elements of inventory costing from vineyard to bottle
    • Oversee harvest/vineyard accounting and intercompany activity
    • Effectively communicate accounting concepts to non-finance employees
    • Prepare and provide support schedules for annual federal, state, and local property tax returns
    • Monitor and approve cash disbursements, bank account balances, and adherence to credit covenants
    • Oversee winery compliance reporting to meet local, state and federal regulations, including (but not limited to) the following:
      • Sales, excise and property taxes
      • Winery production
      • Product registration
      • Licenses and permits
  • Control & Maintain Financial Systems
    • Manage access to accounting and finance systems in conjunction with business intelligence function
    • Monitor the integrity of financial data in various systems used by accounting and finance
    • Ensure proper maintenance and review of chart of accounts, dimensional hierarchies, and master data
  • Audit and Internal Controls
    • Coordination, scheduling and leading communications with external financial auditors
    • Oversee annual physical inventory
    • Prepare and review client-prepared audit schedules, including tax provision
    • Manage and support other audits as required
    • Establish, maintain, and monitor effective internal controls
    • Issue, maintain and update accounting policies and procedures
    • Educate business partners on proper controls, policies, and procedures
  • Financial Planning, Analysis & Reporting
    • Support the financial budget process within the company’s annual operating plan, including assisting managers in the creation of departmental budgets
    • Monthly sales report creation and distribution
    • Perform quarterly financial performance reviews with department managers
    • Provide insights and support to sales, production and financial forecast models
    • Measure, support and provide insight to company performance indicators
    • Ad hoc analyses as requested

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead, inspire, manage, motivate, coach and mentor staff -- including both direct reports and broader team – to optimize performance, efficiency, and team morale.  Activities include staff planning, recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, goal setting, assigning and directing work, conducting performance reviews, and addressing/resolving performance exceptions in a timely manner.
  • Directs team’s training and professional development efforts to ensure growth and excellence in skills and knowledge.
  • Build staff capability, ensure highest levels of teamwork and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Addresses personnel issues in a timely manner and takes disciplinary action when necessary.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in accounting and a minimum of 10 years of relevant and progressively responsible accounting and finance experience preferably with minimum 3-5 years in a similar position; wine industry experience is also highly desirable; 3+ years of prior supervisory experience required 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS: Desirable – CPA, graduate degree, or other qualification 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and willingness to become directly involved in issue resolution, task execution and completion.        Strategic thinker who will own, in partnership with the Finance Director, the responsibility for company finances.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required, strong ERP systems experience (NAV highly desirable)
  • Keen analytic, organization and problem solving skills which allows for strategic data interpretation versus simple reporting
  • Commitment to continuous improvement; identifies and implements opportunities to improve business processes for efficiency, speed, and accuracy
  • Highly organized, detail oriented and efficient with the ability to effectively prioritize a broad array of deliverables
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management
