UX/UI Designer Internship  - chatbots and messenger product


Syllable is a VC funded startup company in Sunnyvale, California.


We develop artificial intelligence solutions for healthcare communication, through text and voice using natural language.  


The company was founded in 2016.


Position Summary


UX/UI Team | 2018 Summer Internship

Sunnyvale, CA | Syllable Corporation


Your goal: to work as part of our UX/UI team in the following areas:


  • Chatbot for patients visiting clinics/health organizations

  • Web dashboard for backend management

  • Secure messenger for healthcare

  • Graphic design for company marketing material


The UX/UI Designer position will focus primarily on the healthcare use cases but will also have the opportunity to contribute and engage in a variety of other areas critical to our mission.



You will:   


Develop high-level and detailed storyboards, mockups, and prototypes to effectively communicate with engineers and customers through text and voice interactions and design ideas


Create detailed, comprehensive text and voice design specifications for collaboration with the engineering team and define and extend text and voice personality for new product areas.


Evaluate usability and consistency of existing dialog flows and recommend design changes


Create guidelines, reference artifacts, and resources for engineers to assist in design and implementation of text and voice interactions


Develop and evangelize user interaction design best practices and guidelines to ensure a consistent experience for users across Syllable Products


Assist in visual design for company marketing materials



Applicants for UX/UI Designer Internship at Syllable should have a strong interest in healthcare and one or more of the following areas: natural language processing, human-computer interfaces, knowledge representation and reasoning, spoken languages, psychology, and sociology.




Minimum qualifications:


Currently pursuing BA/BS in Visual Design, Graphic Design, Human-Computer interaction, Linguistics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience


Experience in designing web or voice applications


Preferred qualifications:


Experience in designing and tuning directed dialog, text and voice, as well as natural language interactions for computer applications


Experience in designing speech-enabled interaction flows across for mobile devices


Experience in persona design and designing/writing in persona


Technical knowledge of the mechanics of writing vs. speaking


Experience with qualitative usability testing and experience on a design team that ships consumer products


Ability to demonstrate technical knowledge of relevant topics in dialog design and decision management
