General Job Description

The Program Director provides leadership, management and supervision of staff and students. Working closely with the Senior Staff Team, the Director oversees daily operations and ensures student safety and success. The Director is the primary contact for the New York office, university representatives, and parents. Directors are responsible for implementing staff training and student orientation, holding daily staff meetings and handling all student disciplinary issues. The director is ultimately accountable for the overall success of the program.

***This is a live-in position for the duration of the program.***

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Pre-Program Planning

  • Become familiar with program structure and offerings: review existing promotional materials and internal documents (i.e Director’s Handbook, budget, past program reviews, orientation materials, etc.).   

  • Revise and customize staff, and student, orientation programs.

  • Communicate with staff members via e-mail and phone to build a strong team

  • Be available for several training sessions (by phone or in person) in the Spring.

Program Responsibilities


  • Work with senior staff team to ensure that students clearly understand Summerfuel expectations, policies and the appropriate channels to direct concerns and program issues

  • Daily safety and supervision of students

  • Manage senior team and resident advisor team to make sure that students feel confident and comfortable in their residential settings, academic and     extracurricular offerings are being delivered as promised, and communications between the senior team, students and students’ families are effective.

  • Handle all disciplinary concerns, including student dismissals.

  • Document and immediately inform NY office of any student/vendor/host institution issue.


  • Manage staff to ensure that each member of the team is adequately performing their contracted duties

  • Create and maintain a collegial professional relationship with host institution directors.

  • Ensure that staff members are properly trained and clearly understand Summerfuel policies, daily and emergency procedures   

  • Create and manage senior staff schedule, and resident advisor staff schedule as necessary

  • Supervise program staff - providing ongoing feedback and direction

  • Provide end of program staff performance evaluation


  • Ensure that expenditures fall within budget

  • Maintain clear accurate records of all petty cash distribution

  • Maintain files for expenditures, produce clear financial records with receipts

  • Note deviations from budget and make recommendations related to changes in expenditures or procedures

Program Closing

  • Ensure that all required documents are delivered to the NY office

  • Submit program report, all evaluations and staff evaluations

  • Work with NY office to resolve any outstanding vendor/host institution/invoices    


  • Bachelors require, Masters degree or higher is HIGHLY preferred

  • Minimum 5 years leadership experience in an educational setting

  • Experience working in an intensive residential setting

  • Experience supervising staff and managing programs

  • Flexibility and willingness to work long hours

SALARY: Dependent on experience

Full travel to/from location, room and board included
